137 | Eric Hiscock | Cruising Under Sail | Part 2

Now, I have done it on some super yachts I've worked on all along the coast of Spain and France and Italy, but, um, when you're like 1,000 miles offshore and there's only another 10 nights of that and it's like bang, bang, bang, you're like, "That's a very nice warm thought." [laughs] Um, another who can spare the time gets his satisfaction by making long passages in the open sea, taking the weather as it comes and driving his yacht day and night until she fetches up in some foreign land.

Uh, the cruising done by the majority, whose numbers are swelling steadily year by year, probably lies between those two extremes.

Nevertheless, the basic knowledge required is identical for all kinds of cruising, and it is one of the fascinations of the sport that the most modest ditch crawler must in some part equip himself with the exact same knowledge and experience that would serve to take his yacht if she were of a suitable type and well found across the oceans of the world.

What an interesting thought.

So it's like, okay, they've worked out a, like an algorithm.
C
41:15Chris Stanmore-MajorHOST
Is that the right word? An equation? Whatever.
C
41:17Chris Stanmore-MajorHOST
A, a process whereby they can input numbers and out comes the end.

When that happens in yacht racing, people immediately start optimizing all the different variables, so they get something popped out at the end, which is like a ratings bandit.

So when I get to a little boat, it's like, it's basically the same package of stuff.

It was like LBP minus beam times beam times half of beam all in feet divided by 94.
