We are live on set in beautiful Troy, Michigan at the Leadership Experience Tour.

And my guest, I met him earlier today.

Over the next 12 months, six more men would be found dead along Florida's highway corridors, each one shot with a .22 caliber weapon, each one a middle-aged white man who had been driving alone, each one found in or near wooded areas off the major interstates and U.S. highways that run through the center and coasts of the state.

The names of those men were David Spears, Charles Karskadon, Peter Seams, Troy Burress, Charles Humphreys, and Walter Gino Antonio.

Together with Richard Mallory, they became the seven victims of what investigators, and eventually the public, would come to understand as one of the most unusual and widely discussed serial murder cases in American history.

Unusual not primarily because of the nature of the killings, though the method was consistent enough to be unmistakable.

What matters for this account is the effect.

Eileen was four years old, her father was already effectively gone, and now her mother was gone too.

Diane surrendered Keith and Aileen to their maternal grandparents, Laurie and Britta Warnos, who formally adopted both children and raised them in Troy, Michigan, presenting the children in the community as their own, rather than as their daughters' abandoned babies.

The circumstances of the adoption were kept from the children for several years, and when Aileen eventually learned the full truth of her parentage, the revelation added another layer to a foundation already profoundly unstable.
