Triumvirate

So now Crassus has a wingman.

In the year 60, Caesar is able to get these arch-rivals, Crassus and Pompey, to at least tolerate each other and form with him the First Triumvirate, an unofficial alliance that allowed them to completely dominate politics.

Personal rivalries could be put aside as long as they worked together for their mutual gain.

Caesar and Pompey spent most of their time waging war, but Crassus preferred to stay in Rome.

And in 55, the fragile alliance of the triumvirate was fraying at the seams.

Julius Caesar, still the junior man of the three, convinced Pompey and Crassus to agree on one big last plan.

The Triumvirate wrangled a second co-consulship for Pompey and Crassus, and afterwards they would each get a nice province for five instead of the customary one year.

Caesar would go back to Gaul, fighting barbarians, and if you have listened to our episode on Vercingetorix, you know how that goes.

Octavian will get North Africa, in addition to overseeing things on the home front.

It's the foundation of what is known as the Second Triumvirate.

The entire Roman universe is to be governed in executive fashion by just three men.

Caesar famously was the architect of the First Triumvirate, an arrangement between three generals come statesmen, himself, Pompey, and Crassus.

But there is a crucial difference second time around.

Again, a case of Octavian not wishing to repeat his predecessor's mistakes.

The first gang of three was an unofficial alignment, a borderline kleptocracy.

The second iteration is going to come with official endorsement.

Remember, the Parthia relationship with Rome has gone through various cycles.

Remember our old mate from the Triumvirate? Who was the third member of the Triumvirate? Oh,

Crassus.

Crassus.

Accordingly he tried to reconcile them by persistently showing them that their mutual ruin would only increase the power of such men as Cicero, Catullus, and Cato, men whose influence would be nothing if Crassus and Pompey would only unite their friends and adherents, and with one might and purpose direct the affairs of the city.

He persuaded them, reconciled them, and won them both to his support, and constituted the Triumvirate an irresistible power, with which he overthrew the Senate and the people, not by making his partners greater, the one through the other, but by making himself greatest of all through them.

For owing to the support of both, he was at once triumphantly elected consul, and during his consulship they voted him armies to command, and put Gaul into his hands, and so, as it were, established him in an acropolis, thinking to share the rest with one another at their leisure, if they secured to him his allotted province.

Now Pompey did all this from an unbounded love of power, but to that ancient infirmity of Crassus, his avarice, there was now added a fresh and ardent passion, in view of the glorious exploits of Caesar, for trophies and triumphs.

And, uh [laughs] as it turns out, unfortunately, Daniel Chari, Dawn Storms, and Braxton Romain now have overthrown the King of Dumas and rule together as the new Triumvirate.

But still, I think that KOTOR 2 brought in a lot of awesome characters.

I mean, that's where we got the Sith Triumvirate of Darth Nihilus, Darth Sion, and Darth Traya.

um you get to experiment more with lightsaber combinations so you can actually play as a dual wielding lightsaber user and um you know have a little bit more experimentation with your color and in the in while people you know rightfully say that the story is not as good as kotor one because there is not a better star wars story in video game form than kotor one Spoiler.

It's still a really, really good game.

I think that this game is over-criticized, and it's one that I've played multiple times, and I've enjoyed it every time.

I think the final battle against Trey is awesome, and then obviously you're fighting the Triumvirate leading up to her.

So if you've not played KOTOR 2 and you have played KOTOR 1 and you've only heard bad things about KOTOR 2, I would say give it a shot.

Obviously, don't go in expecting some crazy... you know, reveal like you're revving like, like a KOTOR one, but it is definitely an enjoyable game.
