They're led by a shy, nebbishy guy named Varad, who doesn't want to be shy and nebbishy anymore.

Since he's an unjoined Trill, his plan is to take the Dax symbiont from Jadzia and join with it.

Rather than let the criminals kill everybody, Jadzia agrees, and Dr. Bashir does the transfer.

Afterwards, Varad is bold and confident and not at all nebbishy.

Overall, I like this episode.

It gives us a bit of an insight into Trill society, showing that most Trills are actually not joined.

I like the way Sisko uses his previous relationship with Dax, or the Daxes maybe, to connect with Varad and to have sort of an opening there after Varad has been joined.

But Worf, in an honestly kind of cool moment, assures that she is Dax and she will find a way.

Ezra goes to her quarters and recites something in the Trill language, the Ritual of Emergence, which brings Duran to the forefront in her mind.

And so we get to have Duran sit again.

Trill were a race created from TNG for a one-off episode, but in DS9, we know she and the Trill become a more fully realized character and race.

With her pre-established relationship with Cisco, the flashback she has on the day she became a host and that, that was really, you know, very much inserted in there and that to kind of, I think, to show us an indicator of the importance she would hold in the future of the series.
