So there was, of course, no dialogue.
Gregory GeorgeHOST

And the music was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by T.S. Eliot, Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe.
Gregory GeorgeHOST
9:37
So it is obviously based on the 1939 poems written by T.S. Eliot called Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.
Gregory GeorgeHOST
9:44
Andrew Lloyd Webber began setting T.S. Eliot's poems to music in 1977 and it actually started off as a song cycle in 1980 so there wasn't a through line at all which I think now when you watch the show that makes sense why the storyline is a bit floaty in places it's because it wasn't ever meant to be a story throughout it and it was called Practical Cats originally so it had a longer title it wasn't just called Cats and this was because when they made the poster with the very iconic cat's eyes they looked at the logo and practical cats and they were like it's just too much like there's too much going on let's go simple and that blows my mind because it's now become I'd say definitely one of the most famous musical theatre logos of all time like you can see those cat's eyes and you know exactly what you that musical is, which is just such clever branding.
Gregory GeorgeHOST
10:43
You don't need to explain anything more.
Gregory GeorgeHOST
10:44
So yeah, glad that they cut that down.
Gregory GeorgeHOST
10:46
Now, producer Cameron McIntosh recruited director Trevor Nunn and choreographer Gillian Lynn to turn it into a complete musical.
Gregory GeorgeHOST
10:53
Gillian Lynn is a name which is going to pop up quite a lot because, of course, her choreography in this musical is iconic.
Nick ClarkHOST
10:44
He also, he has these curtains and the beard.
Nick ClarkHOST
10:46
I kept thinking he looked a bit like a younger Trevor Nunn.
Nick ClarkHOST
10:49
And I wondered in the cherry orchard.
Nick ClarkHOST
10:51
Oh God,
Nancy DurrantHOST
10:51
you've got it.
Nick ClarkHOST
10:52
In the Cherry Orchard, Geoff Rule also had the sort of curtains and the beard.
Nick ClarkHOST
10:56
I thought, there's another Trevor Nunn.
Nick ClarkHOST
10:57
Do you have to have a Trevor Nunn? Funnily enough, Trevor
ScottHOST
74:38
Like, there are places in this story where Gardner name drops serious directors as well.
ScottHOST
74:44
Did you notice that? Like Trevor Nunn, the theater director, right? He's a big, big name.
ScottHOST
74:49
Yeah.
ScottHOST
74:49
That Dragon Ball lunches with.
Stephen MearGUEST
14:23
Ewan's been born.
Stephen MearGUEST
14:24
But I did Anything Goes at the National with Trevor Nunn.
Stephen MearGUEST
14:28
I was young starting off and all the creative team were amazing.
Stephen MearGUEST
14:32
And it was Trevor Nunn's last big show at the National before he left.
Stephen MearGUEST
14:37
And he gave this young choreographer me a chance.
Stephen MearGUEST
14:40
And he gave me dance arrangements by Gareth Valentine.
Sarah SpringHOST
72:15
Like, really, really fascinating character.
Sarah SpringHOST
72:18
And in the, I think, was this in the Trevor Nunn or the Kenneth? No, it must have been the Trevor Nunn production where they actually managed to have Dame Judi Dench double as both Hermione and Perdita.
Sarah SpringHOST
72:36
Right.
Sarah SpringHOST
72:37
It's really difficult to do.
Matt KoplikHOST
18:36
There's a film version with Dorothy Dandridge.
Matt KoplikHOST
18:38
There's another film version from Trevor Nunn's iteration of it.
Matt KoplikHOST
18:43
Porgy and Bess keeps getting done and keeps getting tinkered with and going back to its origins.
Matt KoplikHOST
18:48
It goes to its origins and then it gets tinkered with and goes to its origins and gets tinkered with.
Gyles BrandrethHOST
54:00
Andrew Lloyd Webber's Macavity isn't my Macavity, and I'm not sure that Elliot's verses as lyrics really work.
Gyles BrandrethHOST
54:09
The best song by a long way is Memory, and it's written by Trevor Nunn.
Harriet JaineHOST
54:15
Wow, Giles, you're quite outspoken there about a few people, aren't you? I
Gyles BrandrethHOST
54:22
am.
Tom StoppardGUEST
23:51
Right.
Tom StoppardGUEST
23:52
And latterly with, that was Peter Wood, latterly with Richard Eyre and Trevor Nunn once each.
Tom StoppardGUEST
23:59

Tom StoppardGUEST

Pretty good
Charlie RoseHOST
24:04
Eyre did, I know, directed Invention of Love, didn't he? He did, yes.
Charlie RoseHOST
24:07
Right.
Tom StoppardGUEST
24:08
Richard Eyre, we're going into parentheses within parentheses now, but he directed the Royal National Theatre for nine years, and Trevor Nunn took over about a year ago.
Tom StoppardGUEST
24:21
So Trevor did Arcadia, as it were, employed by Richard, and Richard did my last play, which is, as you say, The Invention of Love.
Tom StoppardGUEST
19:40
if not everybody in the audience has got exactly the same view.
Tom StoppardGUEST
19:44
So it's a challenge and a problem which Trevor Nunn and the company have, in fact, solved very successfully in the case of Arcadia.
Tom StoppardGUEST
19:50
Trevor Nunn being your director.
Tom StoppardGUEST
19:52
He's the director of Arcadia.
Tom StoppardGUEST
19:54
And I wouldn't have chosen to be on in an amphitheater with a wraparound audience and an apron stage.
Tom StoppardGUEST
12:12
It was Richard Eyre's theatre.
Tom StoppardGUEST
12:15
And no, it was, no, I beg your pardon, I think Trevor Nunn had taken over.
Tom StoppardGUEST
12:20
Right, right.
Tom StoppardGUEST
12:21
And after a while, because I got addicted to my researches, research sounds pretty worthy and all that.
