Treaty 9

So I'm so proud at seeing Ramon and Geronimo out there, just like fire and just out there and fighting for the territories.

Because Yeah, the peatlands, if that is disturbed on how they want to mine up there and our people in those communities in Treaty 9, like we have like a do not consume a water warning or restriction.

I visited up there.

I did live up there for a year.

And Ramon serves as a youth councillor with Anishinaabe Aski Nation and Chiefs of Ontario.

and has become a leading voice against both Ontario's Bill 5 and C5, which fast-track industrial development in Treaty 9 territory without proper consultation.

Through Okinawa, Ramon is bringing together youth empowerment, land defense, and cultural healing to challenge extractive policies in the ring of fire.

And Okinawak is supported by Legal Advocates for Nature's Defense, LAND, in the role as a legal intervener.

And that includes how this law is now being implemented.

We're seeing repeal of the Endangered Species Act.

We've seen repeal of environmental assessments for some of the largest mining projects in Treaty 9, the Eagles Nest Mine.

And we're seeing exemptions for archaeological assessments.

Quick description.

The Ring of Fire sits about 500 kilometers northeast of Thunder Bay in the Muskeg of Ontario's James Bay Lowlands on Treaty 9 territory.

Pat Prospectors found it in 2007 and named it after a Johnny Cash song.

Beneath the peat moss lies in the Canadian shield deeply seamed with nickel and cobalt for batteries used in electric vehicles and smartphones, copper for the grids at power data centers, titanium, platinum, and palladium for aerospace and the largest deposit of chromite.
