This piece was really triggered by correspondence that went to the provincial government in July from First Nations in the Treaty 8 area up in the northeast who were sitting down in negotiations to participate with the province in a decision about how to divvy up royalties that they expected to grow as a result of a new royalty policy on natural gas.

Treaty 8 First Nations experts, who are direct partners in the gas-rich northeast and receive a percentage of these royalties, alerted transportation officials of the discrepancies back in June.

After about a month of nothing, they literally hand-delivered a letter to Premier David Eby on July 14th, explicitly laying out these calculation errors.

At first, when the government checked the numbers, they actually came back and told the Treaty 8 experts First Nations representatives that there were actually no errors.

And it actually took James Tate, a legal advisor for Treaty 8, who stated that they requested an urgent, transparent technical review for weeks, and they were actually met with absolute silence on the matter.

Now, for a government that constantly champions the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, otherwise known as DRIPA, ignoring the direct expert financial warnings of indigenous nations to protect their political narrative is a staggering display of bad faith.

Now, the government states that these administrative errors have no impact on the incoming natural gas royalty framework, which is set to launch next year on January 1st, 2027. which is an account that the mainstream media has parroted in their accounts of the story.
