Treasure Island

Picture yourself standing at the edge of San Francisco Bay on a cool November morning in 1935.

There's a crowd gathered on Treasure Island, right in the middle of the bay, and they've gone quiet.

Because out on the water, something enormous is being readied for departure.

Four radial engines, a hundred feet of wingspan, a hull shaped like the bottom of a ship.

Over 100,000 pieces of mail, no passengers, not yet.

Just the China Clipper, Edwin Music, and a crew of five.

The crowd on Treasure Island was enormous.

There were newsreel cameras.

Then District 4 on the west side that includes the Sunset, Pine Lake Park, Lakeshore, Merced Manor, and the controversial Sunset Dunes Park.

Next, we have District 6 on the Upper East Side of the city, that includes the Soma Neighborhood and Treasure Island.

Plus District 8, that includes the Castro, Noe Valley, and Glen Park.

And finally, District 10, that includes Bayview Hunters Point, Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, and Visitation Valley.

The blimps operated out of several stations up and down the coast.

The Naval Air Station at Treasure Island was one of them.

Treasure Island is a man-made island sitting in the middle of San Francisco Bay, built for the World's Fair in 39 and handed over to the Navy before the paint was even dry.

By the summer of 42, it was a busy, purposeful place.

The L8 was a K-class blimp, about 250 feet from nose to tail, a big helium-filled envelope with a gondola slung underneath, roughly the size of a large automobile.

Both of them were Navy officers.

Both of them had done this before.

They lifted off from Treasure Island at 6.03 in the morning.

However, I'll flip it over.

This is our Treasure Island camera and on a totally clear morning, you would be able to see the Bay Bridge lights, the entire San Francisco skyline, but San Francisco and the coast is shrouded in fog this morning.

Just be aware of that.

This is all because a cooling trend is now moving in a cold front.

Let's show you a look now from across the Bay.

Our camera on Treasure Island capture the grayish brown haze that created all the smoky skies.

It was a similar scene around the Bay Bridge as well.

The Marin County Fire Department, which contracts with Cal Fire, is aiming to burn 260 acres, which is about one-third of the size of Angel Island.

Yeah, it is.

All right, in the meantime, what we've got is a little interest in the Bay there.

This is Treasure Island.

Checking out the Bay, where it's been a little hazy as a result of that controlled burn on Angel Island nearby.

so for today sunny and a bit warmer than yesterday was tomorrow though it's going to turn cloudier and much cooler but we'll be warming up next week going into fall in fact it's going to be very warm wednesday and thursday but for this afternoon look for high temperatures in the mid 60s along the coastline we'll see upper 70s around the bay shoreline which is milder than yesterday was up in the north bay 82 at napa 87 santa rosa in the inland east bay Upper 80s to near 90 in places like Antioch, Concord, Livermore.
