Treasure hunting

Where I was, like, watching it and I was like, "I don't remember any of this story all that much," but then it would be like, "Treasure hunting." And I was like, "Why are we treasure hunting for my love? We treasure hunting for his love."

That's my favorite number.

Anyway, on to this podcast.

On this podcast episode, I have a gentleman who is a true waterman, is very well-versed in so many fisheries, and even goes beyond that as being part of doing treasure hunting and treasure salvage, which is really cool to talk to him about.

He is a huge part of the program, being the captain of the frigate, and being part of Allen Exploration and everything that has to do with Walker's Key and everything that they've done with fishing.

So it's really, really cool to sit down and have a talk with him.

And it's really cool to have something that

I think we all probably enjoy hearing a lot about.

You know, treasure hunting, you know, kind of makes you think of Pirates of the Caribbean.

And I don't think there's many people that love fishing or boating that, you know, don't have some respect or infatuation with pirates and, you know, all the tall ships of back in the day.

And I guess that's where my question is for you is, did you ever imagine that you would take, you know, from the silver screen, people out into the American wilderness looking for these treasures? We always thought that...

Promotional stuff, great, make real treasure hunts based on the movie.

It's always a bad idea.

It just, stuff gets wrecked is usually what happens.

There's whole movies made about how treasure hunts destroyed the thing they're looking for.

Right? Happens a lot.

The treasure has to be the least important part of the hunt.

One of the other sections of the book focuses on this rich subject of treasure hunting.

Fascinating question, kind of a dark subject in some senses as well, because it really digs down into some of these perceptions among local people that are quite widespread in Turkey, that you talk about how there's this sense of treasures buried underneath the soil that have been left by the various different groups who previously lived there.

particularly areas that Armenians lived in, there's this general perception that, or myth, that they buried gold or treasures under the soil with the intention of picking it up at some point in the future.

And again, like I say, kind of a difficult, sensitive one to talk about.

What did you learn as you conducted the research on this particular issue? What are those public attitudes to treasure or the perception of treasure beneath the soil? And has that changed over time?

Treasure hunting is one of the most hot topics, probably, when you ask people about archaeology.
