Does Treadmill Running Actually Work?
S
16:51speaker_0HOST
It's just everything is in one place and it's sort of like, you know, it's in a good place, guys.
S
16:57speaker_0HOST
I believe that if you've never used the treadmill training and maybe you live in areas where it's really hot outside, think about it think about how much improvement you can make if you were actually to do some of your workouts on a treadmill when it's really miserable outside and and that alone makes me think that you know i need to be able to maybe if not go to the gym at some point maybe purchase a treadmill because it's something that it's just so useful that can you know you can do a like even if you sometimes wake up really early and maybe you can't go outside or you come from work and you can't go outside because it's too dark well by having a treadmill you just eliminate all the problems that you can possibly have you know you can just get on it and what's your excuse it's just right in your home all you got to do is push the on button and here you are going and putting in your mileage so i do think that treadmill is a wonderful tool If used correctly, there are a lot of good treadmills and maybe one one time we should talk about about you know which treadmills are good and I could probably ask all the people that I coach because a lot of them have treadmills and it would be really cool to actually talk about like which treadmills are the best and for who you know if you you know depending on how fast you're trying to go on a treadmill and things like that but I think there are really good treadmills nowadays and it's not like those days where it was extremely expensive I think that you can find pretty decent treadmill anywhere from like i don't know probably from anywhere looking from like two to three thousand all the way up to like ten thousand right to the best of the best treadmills woodways and things like that so but anyway guys thank you so much for listening to this episode and again i hope that you uh take time and incorporate treadmills into your training doing a strategic way uh you know especially if you're trying to improve some mechanics treadmill is a great way if you find yourself quite like having that really low cadence in races and runs.
S
18:59speaker_0HOST
Treadmill can really bridge that gap and get you back off by shortening a little bit of your stride, but also making sure that your cadence becomes a little bit more higher and when the cadence becomes higher you're more likely to become a little bit less tired longer in the race and able to replicate that pace without you know slowing down because a lot of times you really gotta have a power if you are that kind of like you know 170 to 180 uh per cadence um strength runner i call it which i am kind of like sometimes that 180 is really always my in races I would prefer to get closer to 185 because it really requires a lot of strength so when things get tired you know you still got to maintain that 180 cadence even later in the races versus if you have a lower cadence if you can go like not like like I mean higher if you can go 185 190 you become a little bit more efficient and you're coming off the ground a lot quicker and you're able to do the effort that you need without slowing down.
S

So there's a lot of benefits that I think we can also talk about in some of the next episodes.
S
20:13speaker_0HOST
So thank you so much, guys.

334. Running Form and Fatigue Resistance, Bombshell Doping News, Lactate Gel Experimenting, and How Sweat Rate Changes Over Time!
M
21:06Megan RocheHOST
Yeah,
D
21:06David RocheHOST
and the way that I think that's relevant, and I draw back personal experience on this, is that I think this is a place I used to suck and I got much better because of the uphill treadmill.
D
21:16David RocheHOST
Because when I did these long uphill treadmill sessions, you're really required to have quick form, quick feet, like that's what's rewarded.
D
21:23David RocheHOST
And so just to complete them, especially the long zone two sessions, I would find that I just got better, got lighter on my feet.
D
21:29David RocheHOST
And so if you look back at those documentaries, you can really see that while I might be moving pretty slow, I'm light on my feet all the way to the finish line.
D
23:27David RocheHOST
This is a power that is reserved for forces of nature.
D
23:32David RocheHOST
Yeah.
D
23:32David RocheHOST
So I think... duty factor and how to think about it is light on feet i think that you can develop this over and over um but it really requires you know the some strength work probably matters but i think a lot of it is just re-emphasizing and i think uphill treadmill is was the tool for me to click this into like into gear but how much of fatigue resistance is just a mechanical variable that relates to form That's an open question.

And I think this just came to your personal bias that you hated the treadmill from the beginning.
M
52:16Megan RocheHOST
I remember going to the Duke student gym together and you got on the treadmill for about 35 seconds and you're like, oh, oh.
M
52:21Megan RocheHOST
And maybe it's because those were not great treadmills.
M
52:23Megan RocheHOST
You didn't like the rattling and the shaking and all the different things happening on the treadmill, which is very fair.
M
52:27Megan RocheHOST
But now that we have a good treadmill, I think it's transformed your vision of what the treadmill is.
D
54:46David RocheHOST
Yeah.
M
54:46Megan RocheHOST
Is there a challenge in treadmill workouts that are not done on a good treadmill? Because that is our bias now as we're running on an amazing treadmill.
M
54:53Megan RocheHOST
And is the smoothness and the speed of that, does that actually pare down to treadmills that are not good?

Do you understand you will not lose fitness if you're active for a week on your honeymoon, or you're active for, uh, a week when you have a work trip in Anchorage? You're gonna be okay, right? Treadmills.
J
40:13Jeff CunninghamHOST
One of the things that you need to remember is that you need to put it on a, a 1% uphill grade to essentially mimic running on flat outdoors.
J
40:23Jeff CunninghamHOST
There seem to be some debate on that for some people.
332. The Ultimate Carb Study, Chicago Marathon Hot Takes, The Shoe of Destiny, and Elliptical Training!
D
60:25David RocheHOST
I think it's so good, and we have other examples of this, led by Mikaël Bourdon-Rosseau, who just won the World Cup uphill, um, to end the season, which is a remarkable performance.
D
60:35David RocheHOST
He did that all, 100% of that training, on the elliptical and on uphill treadmill.
D
60:40David RocheHOST
Zero flat-ground running.
D
60:42David RocheHOST
And, you know, he had one of the best climbing performances of all time, and by doing uphill treadmill, I'm not saying he's doing this six times a week, he's doing uphill treadmill three times per week, and the rest of the time is on his ElliptiGO, which is very similar to an elliptical.
M
60:53Megan RocheHOST
He's had a chronic knee issue, and so it's forced him to do this cross-training.
M
60:56Megan RocheHOST
Also, side note, did you know that he hits, like, 50 miles an hour on his ElliptiGO?
M
61:21Megan RocheHOST
So, it's, it's really cool.
M
61:21Megan RocheHOST
But it's inspiring also from the perspective of, like, you know, he's had these chronic knee issues.
