Tray Wellington

You find musicians who get bored with anything else, you know, land in the jazz world because the depths are just uncharted.

And this is stuff that I've seen Trey Wellington do.

And of course, Bela Fleck has won Grammys in jazz with the Flecktones.

I've never gone that far into the jazz world like those guys do, but I gave myself permission to be able to play jazz tunes because Earl Scruggs did it.

So tell us about some of the artists and how do you approach building a lineup that reflects both the history and the evolving future of Black Roots music?

So on Friday night, we have Trey Wellington, who's an incredible bluegrass banjoist who will be coming.

He's teaching a banjo workshop.

So for anyone out there who's like, I've always wanted to play the banjo.

Sometimes they're people who had been students in some of my workshops and camps.

You had one of them on your show here not long ago, Trey Wellington.

Oh, yeah.

Trey, I remember when he was a teenager and he would show up at some of these workshops and camps.

And a lot of really talented musicians go that way.

And then studying some of the jazz greats like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane and trying to learn how to play their solos.

And this is stuff that I've seen Trey Wellington do.

And of course, Bela Fleck has won Grammys in jazz with the Flecktones.
