The Trash Can Sinatras

So this next song is a song by a band we played before.

um quite a few times actually trashcan sinatras and they've been received quite well and i want to mention before we start that last month we lost uh john douglas from trashcan

sinatras very sad yeah

and i think it was pretty sudden too i don't think he was i don't know the cause of death but it just kind of came out of nowhere but he was uh so rhythm guitarist and vocals on trashcan sinatras and uh yeah last month they just announced that he had died and Kind of out of left field.

Didn't know he had even been ill or anything.

So don't know the cause of death.

That would be Ringo Deathstarr from Texas.

And that, uh, set was supposed to begin with Trashcan Sinatras, but I forgot and started with Elvis Costello instead.

That was my bad.

Learning To Love Your Ghost is the closing track on the incredible new album, Ever The Optimists, brand new.

And Learning To Love Your Ghost is a bit emotional to play that track now because the record came out July 31st.

It's been out about 40 days, and just a few days after it came out, we heard about the death of guitarist John Douglas, one of the two Douglas brothers in the band, and that's the first time someone from that band has died right when they got their new album out.

And Neil Young's releasing some stuff coming up later in the month.

You got all kinds of alternative bands.

We can get into that stuff later.

Yeah.

I think maybe that's probably what it is.

He's probably just doing what he does now instead of touring for bands.

It doesn't look like Aerosmith is going to be touring anytime soon or ever at this point.

I opened the package up, saw the T-shirt, saw the logo on the T-shirt.

You can't see it, uh, close up, but in the middle it's like a kinda tattoo that says, "Mom, Dad, The Trash Can Sinatras." And, uh, the note inside said, "Hi, JP.

As a lifelong Tim and avid watcher of A Celtic State of Mind with family connections to The Trash Can Sinatras, I was very taken by the heartfelt response in the program to the sad news of the premature passing of John Douglas.

You and Paul are obviously genuine fans of John and the band.

I also noticed that you had on display their most recent and their f- and the first albums.

Um, but like I said, on a night where that was, that was the dismay, I kinda...

I went home with that and thinking, do you know, that's really, really cool.

And yeah, I do love the Trash Can Sinatras.

Got my house attentive.

Got my eyes on my peripheral view.

The air is thick with phantom killers.

Listen closely to the cries, the whispers and the lies.

'Round the flagpole, out in the dustbowl.

New wrought iron bars over the windows.

They came for the promise of a brave new world and stayed for the golden view.

And when the gale blew sparks on the travelers in the dark, well, they made do.

Uh, Dan Timmons, I hope I've got your name right 'cause it's a bit confusing, your email address, uh, says, "Back in the late '80s and in the '90s, I would trade LPs and CDs with some people outside of the US," where I was based.

"One of my contacts was a guy in Scotland who knew that I was a fan of The Beatles and so sent me a tape of a radio session by a local band, The Trash Can Sinatras.

They were on the Billy Sloan Show, and they performed a version of 'Tomorrow Never Knows.' It's great, but more importantly, there were four other songs that were also great, and I was a fan from that point on.

This was just as Cake, their first LP, was being released.

Seemed like the perfect dangling carrot just to get them to stay still.

When Trash Can Sinatras in twenty sixteen released one of my favorite albums, Wild Pendulum, it felt completely natural to introduce a springy, cheerful tune called Ain't That Something? [upbeat music] Normally, when I introduce a new song to the classroom, it would take at least five or ten listens before they began to appreciate all of its musical arrangements and nuances.

I kicked off one Monday morning by displaying the lyrics on the big ActivBoard.

I didn't say a word about the song.
