Transformers Cyberverse in 2021 gives us a much lighter take on the Dinobots.

Here they come from an alien planet whose people saw Grimlock's broadcast from Earth and decide to copy his dinosaur look.

Sludge's catchphrase is courage and good cheer, and he keeps the team going when they're ready to quit, with his only battle plan being to pound the bad guys.

It didn't.

It was just ass.

Aside from the comics, Astrotrain finds its way into other media, specifically 2018's Transformers Cyberverse.

I initially waved this show off as one strictly for the kiddies, but after watching the show with my daughter, I came to realize that underneath that light-hearted banter, there's a surprisingly dark and layered narrative where plenty of established characters actually die.

including Astrotrain.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

In Cyberverse, this version of Astrotrain hails from a grim alternate reality where Megatron conquered Cybertron, wiped out all unneeded Decepticons, and kept Astrotrain around to be tortured and abused for millions of years.

Once freed and brought into the main universe, he becomes the Decepticon's vital multiversal transport, using his portal-jumping abilities to warp troops across dimensions whenever things go sideways.

But the boogeyman from his past eventually catches up.
