Sean MerwinHOST
29:03
Social media has revealed the D&D Icons Dragonlance project in progress.
Sean MerwinHOST
29:10
So Tracy Hickman and Joe Manganiello both drew attention on social media after posting pictures of their recent meeting to outline a new Dragonlance book.
Sean MerwinHOST
29:18
The pictures included a whiteboard with an outline of various ideas for the book chapters and contents with a heavy emphasis on War of the Lance and the cornerstone concepts suggested by the writing of those novels.
Sean MerwinHOST
29:32
And Margaret Weiss chimed in last week saying, Since Monday, Tracy and Joe Manganiello and I have been meeting with the WOTC team led by Dan Ayub to develop the new hardback Dragonlance World book due out in 2029.
Sean MerwinHOST
29:45
Though you might like a look at the initial planning.
Sean MerwinHOST
29:48
We're all very excited about it.
Sean MerwinHOST
29:50
As you can find in our show notes, I put it, you can find it online if you look up Tracy Hickman, Margaret Weiss.
Sean MerwinHOST
29:57
So yeah, we also got pictures of Tracy Hickman posing with Wizards of the Coast staff, including Justice Arman.
AdamGUEST
10:42
And so they reached out to their game design team and had them come up with a whole host of different project ideas that would bring dragons to the forefront.
AdamGUEST
10:53
So this was simultaneously at a time when Laura and Tracy Hickman were sort of doing bootleg adventures, not realizing copyright laws or IP holders or anything like that.
AdamGUEST
11:07
And so one of their pieces was discovered by TSR.
AdamGUEST
11:12
And so TSR called him and said, hey, your Daystar Media West company is sort of infringing on our copyrights.
AdamGUEST
11:31
So of course, they were excited.
AdamGUEST
11:32
They were having a hard time living their lives.
AdamGUEST
11:35
I mean, very um you know just very very poor uh ended up going out to uh tsr in wisconsin and being offered a position on this spot and this all sort of coalesced at the same time on their way over laura and tracy hickman famously were sort of brainstorming the idea of a module called eye of the dragon which featured dragon riders which is also this idea of the the sort of germane uh the the the sprout that turned into Dragonlance, but they were kicking around the idea of these three characters that sort of symbolize the balance of this module of good, evil, and neutrality, and it came up with Tanis, Kidiar, and Lorana, which would be the sort of three pillars as it were of Dragonlance later on.
AdamGUEST
12:23
Once they got hired in the company and Tracy Hickman started working with the company, they started their own version of trying to figure out and bring dragons to Dragonlance through something called Project Overlord.
Mike SheaHOST

The Dragonlance Design Group got together.
Mike SheaHOST
0:31
We got to see Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weiss and Joe Manganiello and the WOTC team together, and they actually took pictures of their big planning board.
Mike SheaHOST
0:39
So we're going to dig into that.
Mike SheaHOST
0:40
Wes Schneider and James Wyatt had an interesting discussion at Gen Con, which was recorded on the D&D YouTube channel.

23 MINS LATER

Mike SheaHOST
24:06
I think it showed up on Blue Sky.
Mike SheaHOST
24:08
I think there was some stuff on Facebook as well.
Mike SheaHOST
24:10
So in a few different places where Margaret Weiss, Tracy Hickman, Joe Maganello, and the D&D design team were showing off a big meeting that they had where they were talking about Dragonlance.
Mike SheaHOST
24:22
And some of the stuff that you get, which you don't typically get, as far as I can recall, and talking to some friends of mine, it's the first time we can ever recall that you could see their design notes for a book that's coming out in the far future.
Jake BaerHOST
22:28
Hope you enjoyed it.
Jake BaerHOST
22:30
Come back next week and we will be doing some more stuff from The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman.
Jake BaerHOST
22:37
Hope to see you then.
Ross WatsonHOST
52:39
Thanks, I hate it, was the answer I gave to this when it came out.
Ross WatsonHOST
52:44
We will get into the wild pivot from AD&D to Saga, the commercial face plant that followed, and the delicious twist where the original creators, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weiss, came back years later to reveal that the ending was actually a lie the whole time.
Ross WatsonHOST
53:01
Wow.
Ross WatsonHOST
53:02
I know.
Ross WatsonHOST
55:03
The gods and the magic disappeared, and a total system change to a card-driven engine with no dice.
Ross WatsonHOST
55:10
All three of these things happened, and this was all developed without any creative input from the original creators.
Ross WatsonHOST
55:15
Margaret Weiss, Tracy Hickman were like, okay, okay.
Ross WatsonHOST
55:20
They were actually working on a new trilogy.
NestorHOST
13:36
It first came out for a D and D, which is advanced dungeons and dragons for the uninitiated came out in 1983.
NestorHOST
13:44
It was written by a husband and wife called Tracy and Laura Hickman.
NestorHOST
13:50
Uh, it is the story of the player characters in the land of Barovia, uh, which is not to be confused with the land in The Princess Diaries, where you are trying to stop Strahd, who is the main protagonist.
NestorHOST
14:12
Protagonist? Yeah.
Red RoosterHOST
8:09
But basically talking about this is a long-term repair project, essentially, right? So, okay, again, I'm reading this stuff, and I know some people are just, like, have...
Red RoosterHOST
8:19
a complete vitriol or just venom but again you know to each their own but for me i'm like okay i'm listening i'm listening um in talking about having outside creators return so not just keeping it like keeping on the you know the blinders for example right so external partners back into official D&D we have we know we're going to get some new Ravenloft adventures Eberron Forgotten Realms books and that's all going to be due to third parties jumping in again which is that's a good thing I think at least to start and obviously the big thing that I like is the collaborations with some of those classic creators and bringing out Tracy Hickman, Luke Gygax, Ari Salvatore at D&D Beyond, and even having Joe Manganiello getting involved with a more decidedly old-school, grimmer sort of project.
Red RoosterHOST
9:09
Again, all this is talk and sort of posturing right now, so...
Red RoosterHOST
9:13
I can understand why some people think, hey, this is all a bunch of BS.
Russ MorrisseyHOST
3:22
And he was generally talking about this franchise thing.
Russ MorrisseyHOST
3:26
He talked about things like reconnecting with classic D&D creators like, you know, at Gen Con they announced they were going to be working with Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman again and Bob Salvatore and Guy Gax and stuff like that.
Russ MorrisseyHOST
3:39
Bringing on new partners and things like that.
Russ MorrisseyHOST
3:41
So he talked a little bit about that, but I think that's all stuff we kind of know anyway.
EvanHOST
3:45
Sure, but what about Drist? The Drist books are going to make up, what, 30% of this? So that's what everyone's here for, for sure.
EvanHOST
3:53
And Margaret Weiss, Tracy Hickman.
EvanHOST
3:55
But I just think this is really cool.
EvanHOST
3:56
This is the kind of special edition thing that...
Jake BaerHOST
23:23
So come back next week and we will be continuing to talk about fantasy series.
Jake BaerHOST
23:28
I will be continuing with another book out of the Deathgate cycle by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman.
Jake BaerHOST
23:34
Come back then for more bite-sized nuggets of truth.
Jake BaerHOST
23:37
See you then.
