Tracy Arm

It's a very good price for, this is June 1st of this year, sailing round trip Vancouver.

It goes Vancouver to Sidka, to Tracy Arm, Fjord, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince Rupert, and back to Vancouver.

How many days? So it's a seven day cruise.

Wow.

They're moving around.

Yep.

It has two days at sea plus the half a day, which has seen that Tracy Arm fjord.

The other half of that day is seeing Juno.

So this week's deal is a round trip Vancouver on Holland America line.

It visits Tracy Arm Fjord, Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan.

The price, this is for an August 30th date.

The price and inside cabin starts at $959,000.

Um, but no, this is ha- happening elsewhere, uh, as well in, um, i- in Switzerland, the Blatten avalanche.

In Alaska, we had that massive, uh, collapse in the Tracy Arm Fjord, um, last year.

The Mendenhall...

There's concern about the Mendenhall Glacier, all related to, uh, glacier lake form- formation or permafrost, changes in permafrost.

This sailing is set to call at Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway, Juneau, and Victoria, with scenic cruising through Endicott Arm before returning to Seattle on September 26th.

The sailing was originally scheduled to cruise Tracy Arm as well, however, Carnival removed the fjord from its 2026 Alaska itineraries earlier this year due to unstable geological conditions following an August 202- 2025 landslide and tsunami.

Carnival sent out a notice to guests on September 11th, 2026, informing them of the high traffic expected at the port on the day of departure.

The cruise line advised guests to adhere to their scheduled arrival times.

And so what struck me is kind of the cruelty that we inflict on each other as human beings in wars, which I've seen, you know, firsthand as a war correspondent.

The Tracey Arm, the aftermath of the Tracey Arm tsunami reminded me of that kind of hazardous silence that lingers over battlefields sometimes because it was, of course, quiet by the time we got there.

It was a haunting experience.

And to be able to kind of go around and see it up front, put my hand on the rocks that had been stripped away and try to sense what had happened there was very moving and reminded me of kind of the violence that we inflict, you know, knowingly or unknowingly on nature.

That was last year.

And, and, and there was, uh, a, I went on a cruise, took my kids on a cruise to Alaska a long time ago, and we went in this, what's called the Tracy Arm.

And there was w- the same thing happened there, which was if there were any cruise ships there, that would've flipped them over.

But, you know, it was, uh, not occupied at the time.

Switzerland, the Mountain Blatten avalanche in May twenty-twenty-five.

Alaska, the massive tu- tsunami generated by the rock collapse in the Tracy Arm Fjord.

I'm sure if you looked at, uh, at the s- uh, New Zealand Alps and Patagonia and Russian Altai, any glaciated mountain range in the world, you'd probably find, uh, similar processes going on because as the world has warmed since the end of the Little Ice Age in eighteen sixty, mountains have warmed as well.

I suppose the worry is, is if that process is now accelerating at a pace that makes it hard to prepare for.
