And in the midst of public rejoicing, with the approbation of the nobility, except for a small minority with Mary at its head, the marriage was solemnized under the happiest auspices, 29th July 1565.

Two days before, Darnley and his father, the Earl of Lennox, had received a command to return to London, and as they had not obeyed it, a week after the celebration of the marriage, they learned that the Countess of Lennox, the only one of the family remaining in Elizabeth's power, had been arrested and taken to the Tower.

Thus, Elizabeth, in spite of her dissimulation, yielding to that first impulse of violence that she always had such trouble to overcome, publicly displayed her resentment.

However, Elizabeth was not the woman to be satisfied with useless vengeance.

Interrogated the same day, Monsieur de Trappes frankly related what had passed, appealing to Monsieur de Chateauneuf as to the truth of what he said.

Next day Monsieur de Chateauneuf was summoned before the Queen and there confronted with Stafford, who impudently maintained that he had treated of a plot with Monsieur de Trappes and a certain prisoner for debt, a plot which aimed at nothing less than endangering the Queen's life.

Day after day they came to feast their eyes on the portly figure of Sir Roger, and having gazed their fill went away to return again on the morrow.

There was one aged gentleman whose grey gaiters, long-tailed coat, and massive umbrella were as familiar in Palace Yard as are the features on the clock-face in the Tower.

He came up from somewhere in the country in the days when Keneally commenced his first speech, and being a hale old man he survived long enough to be in the neighbourhood when the learned gentleman had finished his second.

At the outset he was wont to fight gallantly for a place of vantage in the ranks near the archway of the hall.

They did not know that as soon as the convict was given in charge of the tipstaff of the court, he was led away by Inspector Denning along a carefully planned and circuitous route that entirely baffled the curiosity of the waiting crowd.

Through the Court of Exchequer the prisoner and his guards went, by the members' private staircase, across the lobby, along the corridor, through the smoking-room into the Commons courtyard, where a plain police omnibus was in waiting, with an escort of eleven men.

In this the prisoner took his seat, and was driven through the Victoria Tower Gate en route for Newgate.

He accompanied his custodians as quietly as if they were conducting him to his brougham, and only once broke the silence of the journey to Newgate.

Thomas died without issue.

George Earl had to wife the daughter of the Lord Hastings that was beheaded in the Tower and had diverse men and women children.

The late Earl of Cumberland married Margaret George's daughter, and another was married to the last Earl of Northumberland.

The Lord Dacres married another.

It is now clean put down; and this is the place where Vesey, Bishop of Exestra, hath planted houses of stone and brick, and many good dwellers in them.

One Mountford, a knight, attended in Henry the Seventh's times, had a manor place here called Sutton by Sutton town.

This Mountford had a house in Warwickshire called Coleshill Hall and a park that was given to Sir Simon Digby, lieutenant of the Tower of London.

South of the guest hall were the Abbot's apartments, now the modern dining room.

Projecting from this side of the monastical buildings midway is the Abbot's Tower, covering the main entrance.

Beyond are the kitchen premises and yard reaching to the Mowen Gatehouse.

Further on, at a lower level, can be seen the so-called Spanish Barn.

The blocks of fallen masonry are all that remain of the south side of the tower which surmounted the crossing of the church.

Mary now entered London unopposed.

The Lady Jane was committed to the Tower.

Northumberland pleaded guilty to the charge of high treason and was beheaded.

On the scaffold, he told the people that he died in the old religion, and that ambition only had led him to conform to the late changes.

The religious question, however, could not be left unsettled.

Mary herself attended the mass service according to the old usage, and in many places, the old services were again introduced.

The bishops of the Catholic party who had been deprived of office in the last reign were restored to their sees, and the reforming bishops were, in their turn, committed to the Tower.

Cranmer drew this upon himself by boldly publishing a letter in which he expressed his grief at hearing that the mass service had been restored in Canterbury Cathedral.

I lay awake some time that night, thinking of the phantom hand and the hidden treasure in Gundalf's Tower, and imagining a variety of incidents which might have arisen in the olden time out of the search for the supernaturally guarded gold.

The thoughts that came and went as I lay in that strange room, sometimes with my eyes closed, sometimes watching the changeful lights and shadows produced by the passing of light clouds over the moon, crystallized just before I fell asleep into something like the form given to them in the following tale.

The Phantom Hand Bishop Gundalf, in whose time the nave and tower of Rochester Cathedral were erected, had been in his grave four hundred years, and the era was younger by as long a period than it is now, when there lived in that city, in a crazy old wooden house at the foot of the bridge, an old man named Roger Raynham.

If there had been any life left in Roger Raynham, humanity would have prompted that course, and Hubert would not in that case have been the man to listen to the suggestions of selfishness, but he saw no reason why he should imperil his own life to enable Roger's corpse to be removed before it stiffened.

So he descended into the chancel, left the door at the foot of the tower open, with the key in the lock, and quitted the cathedral, closing the outer door, but leaving it unlocked.

Great was the excitement in Rochester next morning when the news spread through the city that the keys of the cathedral had been stolen, and the corpse of Roger Raynham, with the skull fractured, found on the stairs of Gundalf's Tower.

As all the ecclesiastical plate was found safe in the sacristy, and the miser was shown by the evidence of the hostler at the Golden Cross to have been abroad at a very late hour, and to have been going towards the cathedral at the same time that the sacristan was staggering homeward from the bull's head, it was surmised that the deceased had robbed the drunken man of the keys, entered the cathedral with the intent of searching for the traditionary hidden treasure, and fallen down the stairs in Gundalf's Tower, a fractured skull being the result.
