And there was this show called 106 and Park on BET.

106 and Park was a countdown show, kind of similar to TRL on MTV, but it was BET.

And At that time, again, you know, this is pre-social media's influence.

So anytime there was a new song from Jay-Z or 50 Cent was coming out or like a new song from Eminem or like Ashanti or Beyonce or Destiny's Child, because Instagram and social media wasn't this like... platform to control your audience and control your messaging, it very much so was still that traditional gate-kept way of becoming famous or promoting or marketing, which is through these television channels and television shows or these radio shows and radio channels.

I have my own obsessive weird things, but I'm so happy I'm not a charts girl, obsessive, obsessing about numbers and, uh, 'cause like, like you said, it's all so bullshit now anyway.

Like, the only charts I ever really cared about were the TRL countdown or when VH1-

... used to do the top 20 music videos.

I used to try and predict where they would land.

land.And even the TRL countdown we found out because of fucking what's his name? My bum is on your head or whatever.

And, like, then they asked us to go on TRL and, which was Total Request Live, and they played the top 10, um, music videos of the day, because it was on every day at that time.

And you'd have to call in and request it to make sure you got your favorite music video up, and it, it was, like, a great show, and there'd be thousands of people outside in New York City in Times Square, like, watching up at the window to see it be filmed live and-

Like there was no rap-

Well, you used to just, I used to come home from school and put on TRL.

That's what I'm saying.

Yeah, 'cause you w- you just wanted to see these videos, and you wanted to...

But that was a thing, you know? And, and I feel like everybody just kind of whatever...

Let's say you dressed in, you know, y- your, your core was hip hop, and so you were wearing, like, a great jersey, you know, and a f- and, and the gear.

And then you're, uh [laughs] to your point, the, all the folks that are there for TRL, and then, um, y- you've got somebody right next to him who's basically, like, is trying to dress like Nirvana, and they're all cheering universally and happy to watch the, the videos.
