The term post-rock is...
B
63:34Brett VargoHOST
It's now a widely used critical buzzword to describe bands like Tortoise and Godspeed and Explosions in the Sky and all these bands and retroactively applied to stuff like Ladder Talk Talk.
B
63:46Brett VargoHOST
But the term was originally coined by journalist Simon Reynolds in his four star Mojo review for this very album.
B
63:54Brett VargoHOST
And really, it was the best way that he could describe this sound that a lot like those talk talk records like Spirit of Eden and Laughingstock goes from ambient electronic soundscapes to sharp bursts of noise to pastoral jazziness.

Also, just before I go, I should shout out, I tend to forget to, but the bed music that plays during the voice breaks, the first two voice breaks, is Maholo by Sun Aurora, and this current one you're listening to is Tortoise, a track called It's All Around You.

And so I think as we were discovering, you know, post-rock was happening in Chicago, Tortoise and Seacake were influences and We were discovering like Nick Drake and leaning into Red House Painters and slower, prettier music.
S

We decided like, let's do the opposite.
S

Like let's, you know, if these guys have perfected this style of loud, screamy music, let's do quiet, pretty music.

I had seen Space Moth before.
D
19:06Dan CableHOST
They opened for Tortoise earlier this year in Portland, and I went to one of those shows, and my buddy Chris Frank, who took me along with him to see Tortoise, he was like, I think you're really going to like this opening band performance.
D
19:18Dan CableHOST
So I was very hyped when I found out that Space Moth would be on a majority of this Laloos tour.
D
19:26Dan CableHOST
It was really... really sweet just inspiring inspiring music for sure um and there was you know just a lot of standout shows on this one it felt like every show was a good one which is really cool for a tour of this length whether we're doing you know spokane washington bozeman Montana you know some of these these smaller places um or if we were doing bigger city like Seattle Washington and just uh downtown middle of the day free show and and you know maybe a thousand people out there to to see the band rip which was really cool getting to see uh Shayna and Laloos playing in Seattle in the place that she started Laloos, I think was a really fun thing to get to witness as well.

I also got interested in Chicago music from, you know, Thrill Jokey.
J
11:19John DiazGUEST
And there were bands that were doing jazz with experimental stuff like Tortoise.
J
11:24John DiazGUEST
And so I liked a lot of that as well as drum and bass music.
J

There was a small subculture in my hometown of drum and bass music that I was a part of for a long time.
