Torrey

They have a morto- moratorium down there.

In the Finger Lakes, there's the town of Torrey.

Mm-hmm.

They're having a debate about what to do there.

Despite a state moratorium on new data centers, rural towns are debating whether or not to green-light future data center projects.

The town of Torrey on Seneca Lake is debating that very thing, whether to allow an existing Bitcoin mining facility to become a data center.

WXXI's Connections host, Evan Dawson, has this story.

These concerns are felt not just in the town of Torrey, but all throughout the Finger Lakes region.

That's Yvonne Taylor of Seneca Lake Guardian, an organization working to block new data centers in the Finger Lakes.

The town of Dryden near Cayuga Lake recently approved a ban on data centers.

I was not able to have that conversation.

But I did spend a while on the phone yesterday with the supervisor of the town of Torrey, Peter Martini.

Torrey is the town where the data center project would be located, and I appreciate the supervisor taking the time to share his thoughts.

Some of what he said was the following.

First of all, he says he doesn't think anything is imminent at that site.

We are going by what we know based on what Greenwich and Vulcan is saying.

[clears throat]

And these, uh, these concerns Are felt not just in the town of Torrey, but all throughout the Finger Lakes region, and anybody who cares about the Finger Lakes.
