I got a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun wrapped around a man's neck.

10:41
I'm a mad, mean mother[censored], and if anyone makes a move, he will die right here.
June LaporteGUEST
5:39
Yeah, I was so lucky that the podcast was already made.
June LaporteGUEST
5:43
So when I got the audition and I was going through callbacks, I listened to the podcast and I looked up the actual event too, because there is... archival footage, like you can go on YouTube and you can look up footage of Tony.
June LaporteGUEST
5:59
So I was looking at that to see what must that have felt like to be in that world and to be in person with him as all this is happening.
June LaporteGUEST
6:12
And I just thought they did such a great job with the podcast that I really felt like I kind of understood where they were trying to go from here.
June LaporteGUEST
9:28
I
EliasHOST

mean, the investigation everything that your character does, too.
EliasHOST
9:32
Like, for you, like, what's your thoughts on Tony? Let's just start with that.
June LaporteGUEST
9:36
Oh, yeah.
Jason Di RossoHOST
8:05
Created by Sean Ryan, he of the shield and the night agent on netflix actually yeah what is the story here
Wenlei MaGUEST
8:12
So this is the real-life hostage drama of Tony Kiritsis, who in the 1970s in Indiana, I think.
Wenlei MaGUEST
8:21
Yeah, I think
Wenlei MaGUEST
8:21
so.
Jason Di RossoHOST
9:29
The actual ordeal lasted a long time.
Wenlei MaGUEST
9:30
So the story, the show that he's trying to get to, and so Giovanni Ribisi plays the hostage taker.
Wenlei MaGUEST
9:36
He plays Tony.
Wenlei MaGUEST
9:38
And Jon Hamm plays this real-life CBS radio.
Wenlei MaGUEST
7:27
So that should tell you that it really, they do stretch it out.
Wenlei MaGUEST
7:31
It's based on the 1977 extraordinary, actually, true story of Tony Kiritsis, who was this middle-aged man, you know, railing against the system and the world, who took his mortgage broker hostage and held him for 60-something hours.
Wenlei MaGUEST
7:47
It happened in Indiana.
Wenlei MaGUEST
7:48
Wow.
Wenlei MaGUEST
8:35
And this is around the time of Dog Day Afternoon and all that stuff.
Wenlei MaGUEST
8:39
So it's a real – he kind of, at least in the telling of it from this TV show's perspective, became a bit of a folk hero as like a done-against man against the institutions.
Wenlei MaGUEST
8:50
Giovanni Ribisi plays Tony Kiritsis and Jon Hamm is the radio broadcaster in this.
Wenlei MaGUEST
8:57
Oh, okay.
Adam ValeHOST
2:34
So it starts off.
Adam ValeHOST
2:35
We see Tony.
Adam ValeHOST
2:36
He's in his apartment.
Adam ValeHOST
2:37
He's cleaning out his fridge.
Adam ValeHOST
5:26
It's like, OK, he's out there doing his thing.
Adam ValeHOST
5:29
We jump over to Jenny.
Adam ValeHOST
5:30
She's at Effie's house, Effie, which is Tony's sister.
Adam ValeHOST
5:35
Right.
Terri StaceyHOST
14:20
You can get it through Prime.
Terri StaceyHOST
14:22
But, yes, it's this story of the Tony Kiritsis hostage.
Terri StaceyHOST
14:25
Has there been more than
Pat SullivanHOST
14:27
one? Is this like a documentary, or is this more like a movie type of thing? It's a docudrama.

Terri StaceyHOST
94:19
I have not, but I've seen lots of clips.
Terri StaceyHOST
94:22
I kind of want to watch them all at the same time together once the whole run goes, which I think is eight or nine episodes.
Denny SmithHOST
94:27
I'm told that they did do the historical references to see what set it up, what set Tony Kiritsis off, what was the deal, what was the mortgage on the property.
Denny SmithHOST
94:36
The property was supposed to go to Kroger.
Ian MacEwanHOST
1:15
It's based on a true story, which I didn't actually know when I watched episode one.
Ian MacEwanHOST
1:20
Back in 1977 in Indianapolis, a guy called Tony Kiritsis walked into a mortgage broker's office and took broker Dick Hall hostage at gunpoint.
Ian MacEwanHOST
1:39
He blamed the company for his financial problems and he'd kind of reached the end of the rope, really, I guess.
Ian MacEwanHOST
1:46
Meanwhile, at the local radio station, there's this host called Fred Heckman, played by Jon Hamm from Mad Men, Your Friends and Neighbours, lots of great stuff.
speaker_0HOST
1:29
The first IVF treatments were in the, what I'm trying to say is the 70s were a big time for inventions, but it wasn't all good stuff.
speaker_0HOST
1:37
There was Scandal, there was Crime, Watergate, D.B. Cooper, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and of course the Tony Kiritsis standoff.
speaker_0HOST
1:45
That's the basis event for the show we are here to discuss, American Hostage.
speaker_1HOST
1:50
Yeah.

7:21
Sneaky Pete's going to bring a certain gravitas to it.
speaker_1HOST
7:23
Well, it's not just that.
speaker_1HOST
7:24
I mean, Skarsgård, Bill Skarsgård is 36, and I think that the actual Tony Kiritsis at the time was 45, and Giovanni Ribsi is 51, and I feel like just on an aesthetic level when it comes to his look, because they showed some of the actual footage in the movie, I feel like Giovanni Ribsi plays it better that way.
speaker_1HOST
7:43
Also, he's playing it more desperate.
Ian MacEwanHOST
2:30
It's based on a true story, which I didn't actually know when I watched episode one.
Ian MacEwanHOST
2:36
Back in 1977 in Indianapolis, a guy called Tony Kiritsis walked into a mortgage broker's office and took broker Dick Hall hostage at gunpoint.

Meanwhile, at the local radio station, there's this host called Fred Heckman, played by Jon Hamm from Mad Men, Your Friends and Neighbours, lots of great stuff.
Ian MacEwanHOST
3:35
But of course, anything could happen.
Ian MacEwanHOST
3:38
He might end up shooting his hostage.
Ian MacEwanHOST
3:40
during the broadcast so it's an ethical dilemma and anyway it's going to play out there's going to be a very long standoff while this guy is holding the broker hostage and he's kind of developing the relationship between himself and heckman i like the look of it 70s backdrop and kind of the colors it's lots of browns and blues and grays it looks really good i do think john ham always chooses his projects very wisely and and this is this is quality in a way it slightly reminded me of the classic al pacino film Dog Day Afternoon where this guy's kind of at the end of his tether he's desperate and he holds up a bank and there's a big standoff there so I must say Giovanni Ribisi who plays Tony Kiritsis is excellent in this he's really believable as a man kind of with nothing to lose but also his who just feels you know I want to be heard you know and I want justice so Yeah, I enjoyed it.
Ian MacEwanHOST
4:55
What did you think of this one, Hannah?
Dave SmileyHOST
5:20
You know what I also saw as
NikkiHOST
5:21
streaming? Remember how they made that movie about the whole Tony Kiritsis thing? Remember that guy back in, like, what is it, 60s or 70s who had gone and attached a wire to a shotgun and led this guy around downtown Indianapolis? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
NikkiHOST
5:34
That movie is now on Amazon Prime.
NikkiHOST
5:35
Oh, I want to see that.
