But can you tell us why this book is so important to American cuisine?

cuisine?Well, thank you guys for having us here and for your interest in this topic.

Miss Lewis is very important to the two of us, but she's also, as you said, important to the community, the food world, and just the world in general, as evidenced by her image on a US postage stamp, in case you did not know that.

Um, so that's pretty incredible.

[clapping] I had to run out and get one at the-- after the fact.

I paid a lot of money for it on eBay [laughing].

Miss Edna Lewis, w-we are speaking a lot now about her engagement as one of the leaders in the farm to table movement and her interest and pursuit of preserving interest in seasonal and local food.

So what is your history with Sondheim, "Sunday in the Park with George," this album specifically?

I remember vividly my introduction to Sondheim was when Firestone High School in Akron performed "Into the Woods," and it was around 2003, I think.

And the idea that where a typical story would end, it was just intermission, blew my mind as a young student.

From there, around the time that we met, the iconic Ohio State Men's Glee Club 125th anniversary celebration, um, had Michael Martin's arrangement of "Send in the Clowns" on it.

And so I was introduced to that melody, and I can remember watching the movie version of "Sweeney Todd" in the P space with you and Rachel, and just kinda how formative that was.

When it comes to "Sunday in the Park" in particular, I had downloaded Bernadette's, uh, Sondheim, et cetera, which featured "Move On," and then in October 2013 at Short North Stage, Sarna Lapine actually directed "Sunday in the Park." And I saw that with Brenda Leary, and it made such an impression on me, and I've loved the show ever since.

It's not all gimmicky comic stuff, but I, I really like her voice in general, and it's always nice to have a recording with her.

Yes, and I really, one of, uh, one of my takeaways from listening to this is that I think she kind of teaches a master class in handling those quick Sondheim 16th note runs, that it is so difficult to balance, you know, being kind of rhythmically buoyant and on, not getting behind, with fully delivering the text and creating a line.
