His boxing career came first-

The one time he does is at the dinner, where he tells how he was brought up and how he fought back with, against bullies.
GarrettHOST
36:42
He was trying to tell Rocky Jr. how to fight back against the bullies.
GarrettHOST
36:45
And Adrian is against this, but Tommy Gunn is, he tells Rocky Jr., "Dude, you gotta fight back." And I do like him in that scene.
GarrettHOST
36:52
Again, in these calm scenes, I think he's g- borderline good.

that they're thinking about redoing Rocky V? Yes.
McGraw MilhavenHOST
40:06
Yeah, Rocky V, that's the Tommy Gunn one.
McGraw MilhavenHOST
40:11
Yeah, that's the one where he loses all the money, and he ends up in a street brawl, I think, with Tommy Gunn at the end, with Tommy Morrison, but he helps train Tommy Gunn, if you will.
McGraw MilhavenHOST
40:28
And then you've got the Don King-type character in the movie, If Memory Serves Me Right.
McGraw MilhavenHOST
40:32
It also has Sylvester Stallone's son, Sage, who has passed away, and Sylvester Stallone has, not only is that I Am Rocky movie coming out, it's got to be coming out here pretty soon, I would think, which is the making of Rocky, but they're talking about now recutting Rocky 5.

So now what he wants to do is he wants to take a lot of the scenes and a lot of the stuff that was left on the cutting room floor, and he wants to make a totally new re-edit of Rocky V, similar to what he did with Rocky IV a couple of years ago.
Matt WolfeGUEST
62:56
You know, taking out the... extraneous stuff some of the more you know unbelievable aspects of the film and maybe putting in more of the character moments like there's apparently a ton of stuff between him and Adrian that just got completely junked out now whether or not that that's a reason to remake a movie we don't know but you know again with the dedicated fan base I think there's a market for something like this
McGraw MilhavenHOST

Cody, how much of the Fire Frank Ross is just the special teams itself, and how much of it is just like put people on notice in the building?
Cody StootsHOST
67:23
Yeah, it's definitely the first of what could eventually be many if things don't go right.

And then we've got Tommy Morrison, the real life boxer appears as Tommy Gunn and Stallone's real life son, Sage Stallone, makes his film debut in this one.
Steve HuntHOST

When we were communicating via email before we recorded this podcast, you mentioned to me that you'd been thinking about this conversation.
Steve HuntHOST
7:54
that we were going to have about thinking about what the film, this film does right, what it does poorly or not so well, and thinking about the movie that it could have been if it, maybe if it had been done slightly differently.
Andrew RihnGUEST

He's forced to return to his Philly neighborhoods where the first movie was set.
Andrew RihnGUEST

He reopens Mick's gym.
Andrew RihnGUEST

He meets a young fighter named tommy gunn who he takes under his wing and um experiences some personal conflict with his own son and then it ends with a large uh fight between tommy and rocky as they sort of settle their differences not in the ring but in a back alley behind a bar
Steve HuntHOST
9:26
yeah that's perfect it's interesting i haven't really thought about that well i had but not consciously thought about the fact that it picks up exactly from the end of rocky four in the same way that rocky two picks up immediately from rocky one but they don't do that in the other two films do they and i wonder if there was a particular reason why they opted to do this because some of the things that they do at the start of this film they could have they could have made out were a little bit further down the line potentially it didn't have to pick up immediately after but they obviously made that decision what do you think are some of the films of this film in some of the rocky films they're not it's not just about one Fighter, Fighter A, Fighter B, is it? There's more stuff going on there.
DanHOST
72:37
We've got Pauly Panino.
DanHOST
72:39
We've got Apollo Creed, Mickey Goldmill, Duke Evers, Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago, Tommy Gunn.

And it's not his son.
BrianHOST
104:21
The son is not a fighter.
BrianHOST
104:23
So the person that he does take on and that the son then comes to resent is named Tommy Gunn.
BrianHOST
104:30
And he's like this Southern guy.
Ryan RebalkinHOST
12:20
So let's just go right into where we left off, Reuben.
Ryan RebalkinHOST
12:23
Rocky has just finished watching Tommy win the championship against Union Cane on TV.
Ruben RebalkinHOST

Mm-hmm.
Ryan RebalkinHOST
12:30
And Paulie has suggested to Rocky, "Let's, let's go to the bar and wrap our teeth around a couple beers.
Ryan RebalkinHOST
12:36
Drink this, uh, night off." Adrian supports this, says, "Yeah, Rocky, go with your brother-in-law.
Ryan RebalkinHOST
12:41
Get your mind off this fight that you weren't a part of at the end," even though you brought Tommy to that part.
Ryan RebalkinHOST
12:46
And Tommy didn't thank Rocky, he thanked George Washington Duke.
Ryan RebalkinHOST
12:49
And that's what's happened here.

And it's the only way you ever gonna get peace of mind, because believe me when I tell you, that press is gonna hound you with that man's legend for as long as you dare to wear boxing gloves.
Richard GantSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
0:16
You gotta get him into that ring, Tommy Gunn! Or you gonna be in question like you heard tonight for the rest of your life.
Richard GantSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
0:21
Then you gonna start to ask yourself, could I really take him? Am I really good enough? Do people really think I'm a cheap carbon copy or a second-rate pretender who only got a shot because of my skinny tone? Got to challenge that man to fight Tommy Gunn.
Richard GantSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
0:35
And if he refuses, then you gotta insult him.
Richard GantSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER

You gotta dog him.

The ending, though, was very interesting because one of the problems in the film was they couldn't understand who the antagonist was.
Richard GantGUEST

Tommy Gunn, yeah.

James SmithHOST
41:37
It is that Rocky V moment where Stallone can't watch Tommy Gunn because, you know, well, he can, but in Rocky V he does the opposite, doesn't he? He's rooting for him even though he's not involved and he's been left behind.
James SmithHOST
41:50
And yeah, but this is this is real.
James SmithHOST
41:52
I can see why Stallone was attracted to this film because there's quite a few parallels there.
