Looking back on it, and I love Thomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato, and obviously they played a huge role in the 93 Cup run, but there is a little bit of me that goes like, wow, what was the point of trading Bernie Nichols? Because I think it was Bernie Nichols for Sandstrom and Granato, right? I don't know.
J
52:55Jesse CohenHOST
Wouldn't it have been fun to hold on to Bernie Nichols and see what he could have done? Anyway, here's another video of Bernie Nichols.

Hour 4 - Wednesday 08/26/26
A
16:45Aaron WardGUEST
Like, you, you kind of petered out before, and you realized like, oh, the team had to be, even though this is a great team, the team had to be messed with.
A
16:52Aaron WardGUEST
So, uh, those guys who had been there, there was a performance anxiety because Keith Gabe of, of The Detroit Free Press and Helene St. James of The Detroit News called all the guys from Shanahan to Yzerman to, to the Russian Five on down to Brent Gilchrist and, you know, Tomas Sandstrom out onto the carpet for every single performance 'cause they knew like they're, you, you in the media could capitalize on the, the, the hunger of the fan base to, to sell papers and, and have people read your column.
J
17:24John StillHOST
Uh, some other news around the league.

J

Mario played with Thomas Sandstrom.
J
32:48Josh YoheHOST
And for the first half, there was a young Marcus Naslund, who wasn't really Marcus Naslund yet.
C
32:52Corey TusickHOST
Yeah.
J
32:52Josh YoheHOST
had a terrible trade during that season, traded him for Alex Stoyanov.
J
32:56Josh YoheHOST
So it was just kind of revolving left-wingers.
J
32:59Josh YoheHOST
thomas sandstrom who was a good player not a great player and mario so he he didn't need joggers help he was just you know still he was age 30 and by the way he was 30 years old that season 161 points in 70 games that's like what 2.2 points a game yeah 30 years old and he'd taken the season before off so he hadn't even played in a year and a half and just shows up and yeah i mean he Mike Lang always used to say, if Mario's reasonably healthy, kind of a ho-hum game for him is like a goal and two assists.
J
33:30Josh YoheHOST
When he was healthy, that was just an average game, and it was.
KINGS' FUTURE: LA Kings Fans PROPOSE Trades, DEBATE the teams direction and DISCUSS the 2027 Outlook
E
3:24Eddie GarciaHOST
What are your thoughts on that? Finally, this may be res- revisionist history, but let's play that game anyway if it's all the same.
E
3:31Eddie GarciaHOST
In hindsight, should the Kings have traded Bernie Nicholls given how great he played with Gretzky, especially on the power play? Yes, the team got back two very good wingers in Tomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato, who played well for the team, including helping them to upset heavily favored Stanley Cup champion Calgary in the first round of the 29-- or excuse me, the 1990 playoffs.
E
3:50Eddie GarciaHOST
But the team still lost a great number two center, and I think that hurt them long term.
E
3:54Eddie GarciaHOST
And at the very least, shouldn't the Kings have attempted to trade back to-- him back to Edmonton and make him available in the early 20-- 29-23 season? Or excuse me, I'm sorry, 1992-93 season." And that was a lot from Go Big or Go Home Keith.
E
5:50Eddie GarciaHOST
So they could fall short and just miss out, or they could sneak in again like they have the last few years.
E
5:57Eddie GarciaHOST
Uh, as for your last point on, uh, the Bernie Nicholls trade, honestly, that was before my time as a Kings fan, so I don't feel comfortable really getting into that I, I don't recall a lot of people talking about that being an awful trade for the Kings.
E
6:12Eddie GarciaHOST
I think Tomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato were pretty good players.
E
6:15Eddie GarciaHOST
You know, if Nicoll stays, you know, uh, are the fortunes of the, of the Kings much different? I don't, I don't think so.

E
34:29Eddie GarciaHOST
Additionally, there is a player from the 1993-94 season acquired from the Penguins in exchange for Tomas Sandstrom, who went on to have a notable career both on and off the ice.
E
34:39Eddie GarciaHOST
This individual played 18 games for the Kings before moving on to the Ottawa Senators during the shortened 90, 95, 94-95 season.
