Welcome to BX Brew.
AdeHOST
0:10
We're playing the 1981 Moldvay edition of BX Dungeons & Dragons.
AdeHOST
0:17
We are running lots of different modules at the same time as well in a multi-module madness that I don't think anybody else does.
AdeHOST
0:24
We're running Barrow Maze by Greg Gillespie.
AdeHOST
0:24
Welcome.
AdeHOST
0:25
We are playing, as always, the Moldvay Basic Dungeons and Dragons.
AdeHOST
0:32
It never works with my green screen.
AdeHOST
0:34
It looks weird, but it's the 1981 Basic Moldvay.
AdeHOST
0:39
B, X. Dungeons & Dragons, just the basic, not the X.
AdeHOST
0:42
The B, not the X.
James PozenelGUEST
7:54
I've got some grognard cred, I guess.
James PozenelGUEST
8:00
But I started with D&D, basic, Redbox, Moldvay, Eric Otis on the cover.
James PozenelGUEST
8:08
That was my first game, and I remember...
James PozenelGUEST
8:12
I think somebody at school was playing it and they were like, you should, you know, whatever.
Red RoosterHOST
0:29
Basically [chuckles] everything after Zero Edition that was considered basic D&D up through the original era.
Red RoosterHOST
0:37
So that is from, uh, you know, the, the Eric Holmes version through the Moldvay BX, uh, as well as the, uh, Frank Mentzer BECMI, et cetera.
Red RoosterHOST
0:47
So, uh, we'll be going through that stuff, uh, but before we do, uh, please do make sure wherever you are listening to this podcast, uh, series, which is the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop, uh, series of shows, that you do like, subscribe, follow, whatever option you have available to you, uh, to do so.
Red RoosterHOST
1:03
Because that way, anytime I put up a new episode of one of my shows, you'll be getting it showing up in your queue.

30 MINS LATER

Red RoosterHOST
31:15
Um, but it is absolutely still the white box/ uh, wood gray box just with training wheels.
Red RoosterHOST
31:22
But they've kind of refined some of the stuff now to be a little more recognizable today from what we see, right? Uh, it really is a bridge.
Red RoosterHOST
31:30
I think this specific version of Basic is a bridge from the 1974 rules, uh, the original set, through to the more, uh, polished versions of Basic that we're about to see, including this one, right? But this, this was an important piece to get us to the next one, Moldvay and the, uh, what's it called? The Mentzer versions.
Red RoosterHOST
31:51
So let's move on then to, uh, the Moldvay Basic set, 1981.
AdeHOST
1:01
we use it.
AdeHOST
1:02
We have been using it a lot on the Saturday game, but I try to just exclusively use the Tom Moldvay 1981 edition for this one.
AdeHOST
1:13
Because really, you know, it is all you need.
AdeHOST
1:19
Great, so where had we got to? I've just got to make sure all my things are doing the right stuff.
AdeHOST
109:59
We do have a real lack of... trapped boxes in what we've been doing so far i do hope we get one there was one in um palace of the silver princess right at the beginning there was a trapped something or other um yeah you weren't here when we did that it's um i don't know if you've ever played it before um but it's like B3, so it's still one of the training modules for BX.
AdeHOST
110:38
and the whole heart well it's quite famous because um they brought out one version of it and then they withdrew it and stopped printing it because um it was really weird and it also had some what they considered to be questionable content i don't think it was that questionable i i think it i don't know what it was actually i forgot but it was maybe it was some boobs or something um in it So they pulled it and then Tom Moldvay rewrote it from the ground up.
AdeHOST
111:13
Totally different.
AdeHOST
111:15
Sounds boobs.
AdeHOST
