And as I say, if you could give those listeners who may be new to the Institute or not come across your work before an overview of who you are and what you do and then your role within the Institute and then to lead us into these discussions, a potted history of table stakes to table stakes 2.0.
1:45
Sure.
1:45
Happy to do that.
1:47
I have spent... 40 plus years as a practitioner in the high net worth and ultra high net worth and family office space.
1:57
Um, my original 20 years was spent, uh, in the, in the investment world.
2:02
And then my last 20 or 25 years was spent, um, founding a multifamily office in Toronto, Canada.
2:10
And, um, I'm, so I was a chairman and CEO of Northwood family office.

13 MINS LATER

15:09
How can we help families tell the difference between firms that are truly integrated and those that just say they are, perhaps market themselves that way?
19:16
And
19:17
back to Jim's point about thinking about change and what should remain that's still helpful versus what should change or what should be added.
19:28
I would say most of the things that are in the 10 domains model are helpful and are staying.
19:37
So let's start with that.
19:40
Those of you who are looking at the diagram will see a bit of a different design flavor and just because, well, maybe one of the easy things I'll mention first we have simplified some of the names originally part of the horse trading was you know what should be included in each of these categories and it becomes just a little bit um onerous when the names are long and we've made some uh sort of um what do you call these table of elements type uh uh three letter summaries of each of the words uh or each of the categories so people can see what they are And they're still divided into two clusters.
20:18
The first is the wealth creation and stewardship cluster on the top.
20:22
And those are often the more technical factors.

13 MINS LATER

33:30
And so if you're leading a family office or a wealth management firm today, what practical implications do these changes have and again a two-parter here in terms of looking forward and what you're sort of expecting to see in the industry moving forward what competencies do you think will become more important over the next decade and Tom I'll come to you first on that
11:27
I've been in
11:27
this field for 40 years, 40 plus years.
11:31
And I have been in this specifically the family office space for 25 years.
11:37
And I would say one of my observations is that people start in the middle, as opposed to the beginning.
11:46
And the beginning, I think, is goals.
11:49
And people often will wonder if they have goals and if you're pressed, gun to your head, what are your goals? Sometimes people don't know.
11:57
But I think people do have goals and sometimes they need to be teased out a little bit.
16:41
But just a little bit more from you on this importance of collaboration, transparency, coherency, vulnerability, accessibility.
