Today I'm joined by Tom Bailey, the singer-songwriter and musician who helped make the Thompson Twins one of the defining pop groups of the 1980s.

Now, in their most successful incarnation, alongside Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway, Tom created a distinctive fusion of synthesizers, percussion, and irresistible melodies, producing global hits including Love on Your Side, Hold Me Now, Doctor, Doctor, You Take Me Up, and King for a Day.

But behind these perfectly crafted pop songs was a spirit of rebellion and an enduring curiosity, a willingness to question convention, experiment with sound, and follow music wherever it might lead.

That curiosity took Tom far beyond the Thompson Twins into production, electronic and world music, and projects including Babel, an international observer, before eventually bringing him back to the songs that made him famous.

So this is the story of rebellion, curiosity, creativity, and reinvention, and of some of the greatest and most memorable pop records of the 1980s.

Basically, any way we can get in touch with these people, and some of them were on vacation in France and very hard to get to, like Tom Bailey from the Thompson Twins, which, by the way, this was one of his first interviews in years and years and years.

And I like to think, in my little way, that it helped pave the way for him coming back this year on the Retro Futura Tour and doing his first shows in the United States in 27 years.
