And several wildfires are still raging in the department of Tolima, though 80% of the blaze has now been controlled, according to the Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara.

30,000 hectares were consumed in the fires this month, including coffee, banana and avocado farms.

Though the fires sparked many rumours of arson and intentional land clearance, some of which have been repeated by the president himself, academics have suggested other factors, including poor fire management, climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon.

Colombia's disaster risk agency said Wednesday that 18 wildfires remain active as El Nino conditions fuel dry weather.

The hardest hit area is Tolima, where more than 20,000 hectares have burned during 26 days of wildfire emergencies.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara said the fires intensified overnight, threatening homes and power transmission towers.

Firefighters, soldiers, police and local residents are working to contain the blazes.

More than 20,000 hectares of land have been affected, with teams sent from all over the country to limit the damage.

Local temperatures remain higher than average and rainfall much lower than average.
