Four railway workers died on August twentieth after being struck by a Spacia X limited express train while clearing vegetation near Shin-Kanuma Station on the Tobu Nikko Line in Tochigi Prefecture.

At around ten forty-five AM, a caller reported that workers had been hit by a train at the station in Kanuma.

According to Tochigi Prefectural Police and the Kanuma Fire Department, the four workers were taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

"We do not know why the accident occurred," a Tobu Railway official said.

At a news conference, the company said it deeply regretted the accident and would investigate the cause and implement measures to prevent a recurrence.

Services on both tracks of the Tobu Nikko Line between Shin-Tochigi Station and Shimo-Imaiichi Station were suspended following the accident and resumed shortly after 3:00 p.m. Flagship service.

Tobu Railway has operated limited express services linking Tokyo with the tourist destinations of Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen hot spring resort since prior to World War II.
