If you want to have moths at nighttime, at adult stages, something like Nicotiana, which gives you pleasure because it's scented, is a really lovely evening plant, along with evening primrose and honeysuckles.

They give off

their scent in the evening.

And you just keep taking the leaves off every week or something? What do you do? That's about it, yeah.

Because the leaf is the main product, it starts growing up and it'll obviously develop a flower so to make the leaf that's your yield as big as possible you actually break the top off break apical dominance and then it puts a lot more resources into the leaves and the earlier you do that the bigger the leaves get but obviously because you've broken apical dominance then you get side shoots developing And so they used a herbicide that's poured over the top of the stem.

The evening primroses have opened along the path's edge, and their pale faces turn to follow the moon the way the daylilies followed the sun.

The Nicotiana, that white, jasmine-scented cloud I mentioned, is everywhere.

And the scent of it thickens the air around you so that each breath feels as though it were being poured, very gently, through something sweet.

I want you to pause here, in this first hour of the garden, and notice three things.

Walk and notice things.

Notice how the moss between the stones has stickened since you first came down the steps.

Notice how the smell of Nicotiana has given way, here, to something sharper and greener, the smell of the yew walls themselves, and the smell of the night air moving through, the small spaces between their clipped surfaces.

Notice how the path bends, without warning, around a clump of something dark and feathery, fennel, perhaps, or the very late bronze, fennel, that some gardeners grow specifically for the way it looks at this hour, when its leaves have gone the color of old copper and the moon catches them just so.

So going off the textbook, nicotine is an alkaloid.

It's found primarily in the Nicotiana tobacco plant, which is native to the Americas.

And the plant actually originally evolved nicotine as a neurotoxin.
