Tlaloc

He's one of my favorites, a god of war.

The one at the base of the triangle is Tlaloc, god of rain.

Marina, those were the figures in your copybook.

And the stone has been popularly known by a name in Mexico, and it's very easily identifiable by that name as the Tlaloc.

And Tlaloc is an ancient rain deity that is associated with Mesoamerican, uh, societies all over the region.

But the, the name is a Nahuatl name that is used for mostly Aztec and central, central valleys, uh- Uh, sites.

And the stone was attributed as a, as a representation, a carving, of this particular deity by archeologists in the late 19th century when it was, uh, quote unquote discovered because, I mean, um, we've learned to question this, this language of discovery in archeology and in other fields.

But the first time that academics became interested in the stone, they went to the site where it was located in a small town outside of, not very far from Mexico City, about 35 miles east.

Um, and they started excavating and studying it and decided that it looked like a representation of this particular ancient rain deity.

So people started calling it Tlaloc, but people in the town and in the nearby region didn't know it by that name.

Built at the heart of the city, the Templo Mayor was crowned by two shrines that were standing side by side atop a single pyramid.

One belonged to Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture, essential to the harvests that fed the empire.

The other belonged to Huitzilopochtli.

Sun, war, and the sacred destiny that had, according to Mexica belief, guided their ancestors on a long migration to this exact site.

The 1978 discovery did more than recover this single monument.

It reignited serious archaeological interest in excavating the buried remains of Tenochtitlan beneath modern Mexico City, ultimately leading to the launch of the Templo Mayor project, one of the most significant archaeological undertakings in 20th century Mesoamerican studies, and one that continues in various forms to this day.

Koyolxoke herself doesn't appear to have possessed an independent cult, comparable in scale or even organization to major deities like Tlaloc or Huitzilopochtli.

Most surviving evidence places her not at the center of her own dedicated worship, but woven directly into the larger ritual structures built around her brother and her mother.

Religion was absolutely intertwined with every level of Aztec life, from the moment a child was born to the moment their body was cremated.

The four principal gods were Tlaloc, the god of rain who controlled storms and water, essential for agriculture.

Huitzilopochtli, god of war and the sun, protector of the Mexica people.

Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god of wind, knowledge and wisdom, and Tezcatlipoca, god of the night, magic and destiny.
