Researchers compared wheat straw mulch with a combination of wheat straw and biochar across four grape varieties.

Syrah, Trincadeira, Alicante Boucher and Antinvas.

They also compared vines growing at the top and bottom of vineyard slopes.

Both treatments altered must composition, particularly nitrogen and sugar levels, but the straw plus biochar treatment produced the strongest improvements in must quality.
