the same month that an artillery battalion of the twelfth marines became the genesis of the fourteenth marines and engineer elements of the nineteenth marines formed the nucleus of the twentieth marines in march the twenty fourth marines was organized and then in may it was split in two to supply the men for the twenty fifth marines this wartime shuffling provided the major building blocks for a new division the units were originally separated however with the twenty fourth marines and a variety of reinforcing units engineer artillery medical motor transport special weapons tanks etc at camp pendleton in california the rest of the units were at camp lejeune north carolina this east coast echelon moved to pendleton by train and transit of the panama canal in july and august when all the units were finally together the fourth marine division was formally activated on fourteen august nineteen forty three After intensive training, it shipped out on 13 January 1944 and in 13 short months made four major assault landings, Roi Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima, suffering more than 17,000 casualties.

It was awarded two presidential unit citations and a Navy unit commendation and then deactivated 28 November 1945.

He retired in 1950.

A U.S. foreign policy think tank is proposing a shift in America's military strategy in Asia.

Under the proposal, Tinian and the Marianas could become one of several smaller air bases used to disperse U.S. personnel and military assets across the Pacific.

Christina Piritiko has more.

Washington-based think tank Defence Priorities says the US should move much of its military presence away from the so-called First Island chain, including Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines, and concentrate more forces along the more distant Second Island chain.

The proposal identifies Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands as locations where U.S. forces could be positioned further from China's coastline.

The proposal comes as the U.S. military is already investing in infrastructure in the northern Marianas, including facilities on Tinian.

But these ideas come from the think tank, not the government.

The 5th Pacific Ocean Pacific Climate Change Conference is underway at Solomon Islands National University.

So Little Boy is currently on board the USS Indianapolis, sailing to the northern Mariana Islands, where Tinian is home to the 393rd Bomb Squadron.

Colonel Paul Tibbets, who has been selected to lead the first bombing mission, and his crew are ready and waiting.

Their B-29 Super Fortress has been specially converted to carry the 5,500-pound device.

She was assigned to the Ninth Bombardment Group, flying from Tinian Island in the Marianas.

Tinian, by that point in the war, was something extraordinary to witness.

This tiny island, barely fifteen square miles of raised coral, had been transformed by engineers and Seabees into the densest airfield complex on Earth.

Hundreds of B-29s staging through around the clock, the smell of avgas and hot metal in the humid Pacific air, the rumble of those Wright Cyclones at all hours, day and night, rolling down runway after runway toward Japan.
