Timurid Renaissance

So we've talked a lot about Samarkand's monuments and its conquerors, but there's a whole chapter that's often overshadowed by the sheer drama of Timur's campaigns.

I'm talking about the Timurid Renaissance, the burst of art, architecture, and science that happened in the 15th century, right here in Central Asia at the crossroads of the Silk Road.

A renaissance in Central Asia? That's not something you hear about every day.

How did that even come about?

The ribbed azure dome and the intricate tilework are from that era.

And the Bibi Khanum Mosque, built after Timur's campaign in India, was one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world at the time.

But here's something that often gets lost in the story of the Timurid Renaissance.

It wasn't just a top-down thing from the rulers.

She commissioned the Musallah Complex with its massive minarets, and she patronized the arts, poetry, and science.

Her court was where the Timurid Renaissance really took off.

So she wasn't just a patron, she was a maker of the empire.

She was the power behind the throne, and sometimes on it.
