Jeff GothelfGUEST

I agree.
Jeff GothelfGUEST
4:35
I think that the organizations that embrace this, embrace the people and support them, right? Some organizations have these roles like product evangelist or tech evangelist, which is essentially a thought leadership role, right? You go around the world, you write content, you give speeches, you talk to people and you build excitement for the products and services that the company offers.
Jeff GothelfGUEST
4:55
But I think that generally speaking, if I give you an example, there's a few folks in my space who are thought leaders and have full-time jobs, right? They're not consultants, they're not trainers, they're not speakers professionally or in a full-time capacity, but they have full-time jobs.
Jeff GothelfGUEST
5:12
And to me, what that says is that the organizations that hire these folks have a good sense of how to connect with a... a recruiting audience that is highly valuable, right? So if you've got a smart person who's visible, part of the conversation, and you allow them to do that under the umbrella of your brand, it sharpens the hiring brand.

I want to hear your contrary take on this.
Jeff GothelfGUEST
13:35
There are two folks, two sort of peers of mine in the product management and product discovery space.
Jeff GothelfGUEST
13:43
thought leadership space named Petra Willey and Teresa Torres.
Jeff GothelfGUEST
13:47
And they have a podcast together.
Mitch JoelGUEST
0:05
And the only way you're going to develop that or push that forward is by having something unique in the sense of something they want to be connected to.
Andrea WojnickiHOST
0:13
That was Mitch Joel, author, speaker, podcaster, and yes, thought leader.
Andrea WojnickiHOST

In this episode of the Talk About Talk podcast, you're going to hear my conversation with Mitch Joel, where we focus on AI, personal branding, and thought leadership.
Andrea WojnickiHOST

Three big topics.
Andrea WojnickiHOST
0:34
So fasten your seatbelts because Mitch shares some ideas and perspectives that I promise will challenge you and inspire you.
Andrea WojnickiHOST
1:36
Again, it's all at talkabouttalk.com.
Andrea WojnickiHOST
1:39
Okay, so in this episode, as I said, we focus on three big topics.
Andrea WojnickiHOST

You're listening to Leader Laboratory.
Rodney RobinsonHOST
0:11
welcome back to leader laboratory i am your friend and host rodney robinson i'm very excited about today's episode we have a guest who's going to help us answer thought leadership what does it look like to think strategically and to go deeper in our decision making and a question i have for you before we get started is what would it look like if you started using a team as you may know i wrote the book building winning teams that came out in may 2026 As I wrote it, I actually was building my own team.
Rodney RobinsonHOST
0:39
A lot of times when I'm writing, I'm experiencing the same things that I'm sharing with you.
Rodney RobinsonHOST
0:44
And this guest is one of the teammates that I've acquired over the years.
Rodney RobinsonHOST
5:25
And then I invited people like you into the process who challenged me.
Rodney RobinsonHOST
5:29
And you challenged me more on the next book.
Rodney RobinsonHOST
5:30
But we could talk about that a little bit later, I guess, right off the bat, like, you know, When you think about thought leadership, because you're a thinker, right? What does that mean to you? And when did you first realize that developing and communicating ideas was something that you wanted to do?
Jethro IsraelGUEST
5:49
Yeah, great question.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
19:51
I love designing big conferences.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
19:52
So a year ago, I asked myself, what would you do if you started your own conference? And I designed the Gateway Gathering and Pitchfest, which is a conference that's part education and inspiration around thought leadership and building a thought leadership platform.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
20:08
Because now we have to do it, whether we're doing it internally at a company or externally at a company more than ever.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
20:15
Uh, and I also, so that's part one.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
20:27
So I call people trail angels.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
20:29
Um, I like that better.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
20:31
Isn't that better? So I got, I wanted to get a bunch of trail angels together who represent different parts of a thought leadership platform to get them in a room and do a shark tank.
Jacquelyn Fletcher JohnsonGUEST
20:42
America's Got Talent, and get people up pitching their big ideas in front of literary agents, speaker agents, the head of TED, all of TED content, entertainment execs, people like that to get feedback.
Jeff AltmanHOST

This graphic highlights a critical finding.
Jeff AltmanHOST
1:40
73% of decision makers state thought leadership is a more trustworthy basis for assessing capabilities than standard marketing materials.
Jeff AltmanHOST
1:48
The reason is simple.
Jeff AltmanHOST
1:50
Resumes merely claim expertise.
Jeff AltmanHOST
2:15
That proof comes in the form of deep, authoritative content, comprehensive white papers, industry research, and data-driven articles.
Jeff AltmanHOST
2:23
We aren't talking about a quick, text-only post on social media.
Jeff AltmanHOST
2:27
True thought leadership cites strong research, decodes complex business challenges, and offers concrete, actionable guidance.
Jeff AltmanHOST
2:36
It takes effort to create, but this specific long-form format is the ultimate hook for capturing the attention of executive recruiters and C-suite leaders.
Maliha AqeelGUEST

I just think if you offload your thinking to AI, that's when it's an issue.
Maliha AqeelGUEST
0:08
Because then it's not your thought leadership.
Mikulas ZachHOST
0:11
What was like that transition going from, you know, a large corporate to being on your own?
Maliha AqeelGUEST
0:20
But it's not who I am anymore completely.

Maliha AqeelGUEST
9:15
Then I went through this iteration and this is kind of like that ties into your question because it just it does show that when you've worked in corporate as long as I have, it takes you time to find yourself as a consultant and as a as an entrepreneur.
Maliha AqeelGUEST
9:33
And so the next iteration that I thought about was, what do I like to do? And I just want to do that.
Maliha AqeelGUEST
9:40
And for me, that was thought leadership.
Maliha AqeelGUEST
9:43
In all of the roles I've ever held, thought leadership was one of my biggest areas of responsibility.
Dana SnyderHOST
4:17
I loved our episode talking about that you are on a stage in some sort of speaking capacity every single month, and that's led to a lot of growth in your organization.
Dana SnyderHOST
4:25
How strategic, like, are you seeing thought leadership in your conversation with the leaders that you're funding, in your own thought leadership running organizations? Like, when have there been concrete conversations about that? Like, is there space made for that?
Kenita SmithGUEST
4:40
I think so.
Kenita SmithGUEST
4:41
I personally believe that you have to have a public voice now because of how everything is.
Dana SnyderHOST
5:59
Yeah.
Carolina García JayaramGUEST

Yeah.
Carolina García JayaramGUEST

I think we need to humanize the missions vis-a-vis the leader, right? But the leader is really representing a lot of other human beings, right? And so the mission, I think, becomes for so many people, the focus of the thought leadership.
Carolina García JayaramGUEST
6:11
But the thought leadership's focus is really the human behind it.
CatherineHOST
16:14
And for your own content, right, that you're putting out.
CatherineHOST

What happens to your credibility when you get it wrong? My guest combines thought leadership and relationship building to open doors with executives, building programs inside major organizations, and creating business opportunities.
Michael FormanHOST

But we're also digging into what happened when an AI pilot failed and what it took to rebuild trust afterwards.
Michael FormanHOST
1:08
I'll get it, I promise.
Michael FormanHOST
5:04
It's the person-to-person contact.
Michael FormanHOST
5:07
And that's what I go across the country talking about.
Michael FormanHOST
5:09
Okay, so thought leadership can attract attention, but relationships create trust.
Michael FormanHOST
5:17
Where does that thought leadership and genuine relationship building begin? So
Craig HerdHOST
19:59
And, you know, Kay's now, I want to talk about it more about your specialism and more about the data, which you may enjoy.
Craig HerdHOST

And one thing that Kay does really well is the insights and the thought leadership that you put out there.
