Thornhill

When I was working in the library, we had a library that was built in a community.

Um, can I mention the community? It was the Pleasant Ridge community, um, in Thornhill when I was working at Vaughan Public Libraries, and that library was built because the community demanded a library in their neighborhood.

Even though technically they were, you know, within driving distance of the Bathurst Clark Library or the Dufferin Clark Library, um, their voices shaped how that library was then put geographically in that, you know, neighborhood that was co-located with a community center.

Um, and we even displayed, um, the community information gathering, like what they wanted to see in their library before the library was built, and we even displayed that information.

And I'm joined by Esther Mendelson, who is vice president of the Jewish Lawyers of Canada, the group that put on the debate, and Rabbi Daniel Korobkin of the Beit, the Beth Avraham Yosef of Toronto Congregation.

It's a synagogue in Thornhill Vaughan, and it was the target of gunfire back in March.

And since then, two people were arrested.

But two people were also in the building at the time.

It's not like you're moving down the street.

You're not moving from Thornhill to Toronto.

You're moving to another country and all the rules are different and you have to relearn everything.

Okay.

But in order to make that viable, we needed a payment system that crossed, that you could use in different jurisdictions, and that it would lead to a harmonization of fares.

Because if you think about it, if you live in Thornhill, you need to take a Thornhill bus to or come down Yonge Street to Finch, you're taking the Thornhill bus onto the transit system, you're paying two fares.

Or if you take the GO train to Union, then the subway, you're paying two fares.

And if we had a one payment system across those different municipalities and those borders, you eliminate that and you have one card, one fare or harmonized fare that would really boost ridership and actually make the system more usable for people who need it to get around.
