Thomas Newman

Now, The Player has no needle drops in it.

It has a score by Thomas Newman.

Thomas Newman, of course, of the, uh, insanely talented Newman family, which includes his cousin, Randy.

It does have musicians or a musician in the cast.

It's got Lyle Lovett in the cast, which, you know, if you guys were there back in the day, Lyle Lovett was, was kinda like having his mainstream moment, um, here in the early '90s.

It really kind of sets the location of where Shawshank is.

And Thomas Newman does a great job in this throughout the whole score, really.

It's interesting.

I mean, is he the brother or is he like the son of Randy Newman? I'm trying to remember.

Is

he related? I didn't know he was related.

I think he is related, yeah, to Randy Newman, which is interesting because Thomas Newman also did music scores for stuff that Randy Newman worked with.

Thomas Newman did WALL-E, the Pixar film, and Randy Newman did all those Toy Story movies.

But it's like the space between the notes, like what's going on inside the movie, is worth all of that, all of that time, all of that energy of rewatching and dissecting it and really appreciating it.

Like I still, I still go back and watch Shawshank and I'm like, dude, what Thomas Newman is doing here is nuts.

Like I still do that.

Like now I see that movie countless times and I still will be like, Oh my God, this overhead shot of the prison yard with Thomas Newman is like, yes.

Like it's just what I live for.

It's because it's an amazing film.

So, like, this was a really, really tough category for me personally.

Yeah, I'm not a Thomas Newman fan, but Wally's his best score, kind of, like, by a mile.

So, this is fine.

A special another special shout out to one of my favorite composers, Thomas Newman, which if you if you like Shawshank American Beauty, man, this has a score for you, man.

Like because this is right in the middle of all that kind of shit.

But like he did like Phenomenon,

wally yep skyfall uh fucking a like 1917

yeah he's such a good composer and you could see the uh or you could see you could hear uh the like like that there he has a particular style which was definitely um uh It felt more developed in Shawshank compared to like Scent of a Woman, which he also did a couple of years before that.

And then it really just like, oh, you know who Thomas Newman is because of American Beauty.

But it kind of started a little bit even in here, which is like, oh, wow, I can hear the beginnings of American Beauty.
