This Will Never Do

And so I did put the acts, I had a little bit more in this work I did with Jeff Marinoff, I had some of the second act tunes.

So I was able to kind of scale down both acts material-wise, song-wise, but just put what I thought were like the most important songs to sort of tell the story.

And I had also, I decided I had better write, you know, some kind of a summary or something to go along with the demos so that when I handed people these demos, it wouldn't be total, you know, what, you know, wait, what? And they would have something that said, well, it was about Paul Gauguin during these years when he lived in Polynesia.

I wrote out who the characters were, things like that.

Like, if I actually tried to summarize in a very short amount of space for the reader what their relationship was with anybody else, it really...

It helped me actually focus more on it as a kind of theatrical presentation, what the actors, in this case singers, were going to have to do, how they were going to relate to each other on stage.

And so in the songs where, like the first song, The Letter, it's somebody in Tahiti writing to somebody in Paris saying, Gauguin has died.

And then it modulates up at a certain point and the guy in Paris, you know, responds to the guy in Tahiti.
