The Teleri are able to have both the light to which they are ultimately drawn and the music of the sea which they so greatly love.

Thingol and Melian Of course, not all of the Teleri make the journey to the Blessed Realm.

They are a vast people, and those who look to Elwë, instead of Olwë his brother, as their leader remain behind even as the other Teleri depart across the sea.

Why? Simply put, they have lost their leader because he has come under the musical spell of Melian, one of the Ainur.

Melian is a Maia, and she is particularly skilled in songs of enchantment.

By the last, the long-sundered branches of the half-elven were reunited and their line was restored.

Luthien Tinuvio was the daughter of King Thingol, Grey Cloak of Doriath, in the First Age, but her mother was Melian of the people of the Valar.

Beren was the son of Barahir of the First House of the Edain.

Together they wrested a Silmaril from the Iron Crown of Morgoth.

The ones who stopped in Beleriand and never crossed became the Sindar, the gray elves.

Those are Thingol's people.

One kindred, and by the end of the first age, you need something like four or five names to talk about them, none of which is the one they chose.

And think about who's doing the naming in most of these cases.

Narsil was originally one of the swords in Thingol's Horde.

Somehow, it made its way to the Dunedain at some point, and they took it to Numenor.

And then somehow, it's kind of vague, but somehow it becomes attached to Elendil's line, the Lords of Andunie.

I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that kind of thing is actually in the Silmarillion, isn't it? That those things were handed down and were possessed by Numenor, but were lost in the downfall.

I think as in preparation for this, I was reading Um, didn't like the sword of Thingol was eventually given to Elros, correct? And like Elros wielded the sword of Thingol.

In no single story of Quanta Silmarillion is the power of music so readily evident as it is in the story of Beren and Luthien.

In a way, this is quite appropriate, considering that Luthien is the daughter of Thingol, by birth a Teleri elf, whose kindred live close to the sea so that they can hear its music, and Melion, a Maia, one of the lesser Ainur, who therefore took part in the music of the Ainur.

If any child of Iluvatar has music in her blood, it is Luthien.

In this chapter, I will deal with four manifestations of Luthien's unique musical power and explore how they further manifest the important role that music plays in the Middle Earth universe.

Luthien's song seems not only to awaken Beren from his spell, but to awaken the world from the bonds of winter.

The music of Luthien's presence seems preternatural, going beyond the limits of normal experience.

It is interesting to note that when Beren and Thingol agree on Luthien's bride price just a short while later, it is said that Luthien was silent, and from that hour she sang not again in Doriath.

A brooding silence fell upon the woods and the shadows lengthened in the kingdom of Thingol.

To call Erendil a legendary hero is an understatement.

Through these figures we can go back further to Thingol and the Maia Melian.

Aragorn's line does not just contain the greatest heroes and kings of the greatest realms of men, but high elves and kings among them.

And even an immortal angelic spirit of Sauron's order too.

Isildur, Elendil, Elros, Erendil, Dior, Beren, Luthien, Thingol, Melian.

These are just some of the names listed in the ancestry of Aragorn.

It's easy to then say that Aragorn is almost more than a man, at least symbolically, declaring himself as the Renewer, the Envenyatar.

It binds them against anybody who ends up with one of those jewels by any means at all.

Just ask Thingol, who we were talking about on Monday.

Merely holding it is a deadly offense.

And the terms come in this terribly unlovely sentence.
