But I also think that for those of us who like to create, and I am definitely among those people, Michelle's premature death taps into this fear that I think we all have, which is that we will die before whatever we're working on is finished.

Ann Patchett articulates this fear really well in her 2021 essay collection, these precious days.

And I actually want to read you the opening passage of the book, which is all about the intersection between creativity and the fear of death.

The first time I remember seriously thinking about my own death was I was 26 years old and working on my first novel, The Patron Saint of Liars.

Those people were my responsibility.

I'd made them up, and I wanted them to have their chance.

Side note, These Precious Days is a really fantastic essay collection and I highly recommend checking it out.
