The Wrecking Crew

Tonight we're sharing a great graphic of legendary Wrecking Crew guitarist Jerry Cole.

He was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, this date back in 1939.

So if he were still alive, sadly passed away a few years ago.

And of course, he played with Jerry Cole and the Spacemen on the Capitol record label and countless unknown artists.

kind of budget LP compilations in that early to mid-60s range, but he kind of went on to become this amazing in-demand session guitarist.

Like I said, he was part of the Wrecking Crew, so he was kind of one of those great go-to band leader guitarists.

I think he was like the leader of the Shindig Band, and like I said, just worked with so many incredible people.

It's more of a challenge than it is like a musical experiment.

It's more like a challenge to because he was working with the wrecking crew and how Blaine and people like that.

He's saying to these guys, right, it goes from 4-4 to 3-4 and then picks up speed.

And we're going to do it in two parts.

Country? Country guy? Yeah.

Glenn Campbell may have even been on Sun Velvet Morning.

Who knows? Because they were working with the Wrecking Crew and Glenn Campbell was part of the Wrecking Crew at that time.

And he played on lots of Nancy Sinatra records.

A lot of the early musicians were studio, professional studio musicians.

They were collectively known as the Wrecking Crew.

They played on so many hit records during this time.

There was the drummer, Hal Blaine.

President and Pendulum Swinger.

singles that were released on september the 19th include in 1967 when gary puckett and the union gap released woman woman this one was backed by legendary studio musicians from the wrecking crew and it did really well Peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, hit number one in Canada.

In 1972, America released Ventura Highway.

Dewey Bunnell wrote the folk rock and acoustic pop standard.

He was the songwriter who wrote the songs Tainted Love and Dirty Water.

Earl Palmer passed away in 2008 after a long illness.

He was the session drummer for the Wrecking Crew group.

Arthur Ferrante passed away in 2009 at the age of 88.

And so it's basically like the prototype for the electric 12-string guitar as we know it now, but it doesn't have that bright, jangly Rickenbacker, you know, The Byrds and The Beatles sound.

It's, it's, it's much more, uh, film scory and cinematic sounding, much more like Wrecking Crew and Pet Sounds.

Like, ver- single note, and the strings are backwards from a normal 12-st- there's just enough differences about it.

No one's used them in a long time.

Uh, he was like one of my earliest heroes, uh, right after Hal.

He, uh, he was a part of The Wrecking Crew as a percussion guy, and so he got Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer in spades, you know? And so when I, when I met Jimmy, it was, uh, it was, you know, I, I realized that he was like kinda like Hal and Earl on steroids.

And, and I wanted a little bit of that.

I knew that I didn't want too much of it, because I didn't wanna, I never wanted to be a real hard, uh, accurate, like, uh, like precision player.

... where he was enchanted and inspired by the atmosphere and musicality of the bullfights he attended.

He returned to Los Angeles and reworked Twinkle Star with the Wrecking Crew, now retitled The Lonely Bull, and released under the name Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.

[upbeat music] So yes, I didn't know this until now, but the Tijuana Brass, except for the touring version, was basically the Wrecking Crew.

In 2018, Max Bennett passed away at the age of 90 from complications related to Alzheimer's disease.

A legendary jazz and studio session bassist known for being part of the jazz fusion group L.A. Express, worked on a bunch of pop hits as a member of Los Angeles' famed studio group, The Wrecking Crew.

John Seery Sr. passed away in 2003 at the age of 88 after a short illness.

He was a highly versatile American concert accordionist, composer, and educator who was famous for his regular live broadcasts on CBS radio and television during the golden age of radio.
