During production, it had a reported budget of $175 million.

For comparison, The Wolverine was shot around the same time and was another CGI-heavy Hollywood film set in Japan co-starring Hiroyuki Sanada, and The Wolverine only cost $115 million, $60 million less.

One reason that 47 Ronin was so expensive was thanks to a filmmaking trend that we also discussed in our episode on Dredd.

Because 47 Ronin started shooting in early 2011, Universal decided to shoot in 3D, an expensive and time-consuming process.

Kid Shorty's screenwriter Scott Frank set out to change that and worked very closely with Leonard to make sure he got the script right.

At this time, Scott Frank was somewhat new to the scene, having worked on films such as Little Man Tate, Dead Again, and Malice, but has since gone on to write for films such as Out of Sight, Minority Report, The Wolverine, and Logan.

He has also become a director in his own right, doing uncredited second unit directing for Minority Report and directing features such as The Lookout, A Walk Among the Tombstones, and the Queen's Gambit miniseries.

Scott Frank said the big challenge of this script was to write comedic lines, but to make sure that the characters are taking it seriously and not winking at the camera.
