Nick WigerHOST
44:48
So here's what it is.
Nick WigerHOST
44:49
The, the, for, for people who aren't, aren't aware of, of this game's history, um, like I said, it's been being worked on basically since The Witness wrapped.
Nick WigerHOST
44:57
And what it ended up being is Blow, Jonathan Blow's language is game design super collider, uh, which combines the mechanics of four existing independent Sokoban-style box-pushing puzzle games.
Nick WigerHOST
45:10
It's just a highfalutin way of saying it's a mashup.
Nick WigerHOST
45:30
As far as I can tell, it's kinda hard to get, uh, that much information about, about the, its, its actual development history.
Nick WigerHOST
45:36
I know there was some controversy because Jonathan Blow was being so forefronted in the marketing.
Nick WigerHOST
45:41
And Jonathan Blow, by the way, for, uh, for, I didn't give that context, Braid, The Witness.
Nick WigerHOST
45:47
Um, uh, he's in, uh, Indie Game: The Movie, one of, one of the three creators profiled.
Kevin AinsworthHOST
16:00
Because...
Kevin AinsworthHOST
16:01
This is the witness, right? Yes.
Kevin AinsworthHOST
16:04
Okay.
Kevin AinsworthHOST
16:05
I was like, is it the messenger or the witness? The messenger is the sea star.
Kevin AinsworthHOST
16:10
I wonder if they take any feedback and maybe tweak it to maybe make it a little easier or add a hint system.
Kevin AinsworthHOST
16:21
I personally doubt it knowing what I know about the witness, but I guess it's an option.
Sam HeaneyHOST
16:28
yeah maybe i wouldn't hold my breath for sure because i think like i would say the witness is easier than this and that by itself as a statement is going to scare off a lot of people uh because people think that the witness gets to a point where it's impenetrable and to an extent i i would agree um just get your notebook Yeah, I mean, yes, you sort of do have to at certain points and be like, if I just sketch this out, especially if you walk away from a puzzle, which I would encourage you doing, right? And that to me is the excellence of the game because, and I bring it up in the review, I say it reminded me a lot of Elden Ring.
Sam HeaneyHOST
17:10
Because in Elden Ring, you go in one direction just exploring what's over there.
Arthur GiesHOST
23:41
right and you know that guy is not amazing
Anthony GallegosHOST
23:46
Yeah, putting aside all that, I was just curious, what is the Jonathan Blow game like? Because I played The Witness.
Anthony GallegosHOST
23:53
It's called Order of the Sinking Star.
Anthony GallegosHOST
23:56
And it is, as you might
speaker_4UNKNOWN
24:05
The
Anthony GallegosHOST
24:05
puzzles seem very good.
Anthony GallegosHOST
24:07
But like The Witness, I feel like it's like trying to do the storytelling that to me, I'm just like,
speaker_4UNKNOWN
24:12
eh.
Jeff GrubbHOST
32:31
Speaking to Famitsu in issue 1965, Okamoto looked back on the series' revival since its, uh, big Silent Hill transmission announcement in October 2022.
Jeff GrubbHOST
32:42
With all three initially announced titles now released, he was glad that this opening act went off without a hitch.
Jeff GrubbHOST
32:47
"All three titles we initially announced were able to be released successfully, so we're relieved." Uh, and then he laughed about that.
Jeff GrubbHOST
32:53
"They've also received high praise, and we are satisfied wist it, wi- with it." He, however, stressed that Konami isn't treating those three releases as the finish line.
Jeff GrubbHOST
33:02
"Successfully launching this first wave comes with great relief, b- but, uh, we're not stopping here.

Jeff GrubbHOST
49:51
Somebody tell, uh, Duke Mitchum.
Jeff GrubbHOST
49:53
Uh, he's gonna be very upset.
Jeff GrubbHOST
49:55
Uh, from Chris Scullion at VGC, "The last two games in Leisure Suit Larry series are being de- delisted this month following the deli- delisting of the previous seven titles.
MattHOST
25:16
That's me with Order of the Sinking Star, which came out today on the 8th, developed by Tecla Incorporated, published by Ark Games for PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
MattHOST
25:26
And even though I can't play this game right now, as soon as we're done, like, as soon as the podcast is done and up, I'm gonna get my Steam machine on and I'm gonna buy it and I'm gonna download it because this is the latest game from Jonathan Blow, the creator of Braid and The Witness, and this is puzzles, the game, puzzles upon puzzles upon puzzles upon puzzles, like thousands, hundreds, thousands of puzzles, like handcrafted, handmade puzzles.
MattHOST
25:50
And just like Eric, kinda with Silver Pines, I watched two reviews and I skipped through most of one 'cause I didn't want puzzle mechanics spoiled for me, I didn't want story spoiled for me.
MattHOST
26:00
But basically what this game is is you are a character who goes to this weird place, and it's, like, broken up into quadrants.
MattHOST
28:52
If you're iffy on puzzles, I would say if that demo's still available, check it the fuck out 'cause it is so cool.
MattHOST
28:59
Like, I know Eric loves puzzles.
MattHOST
29:01
I know he was a Witness man for a long time.
MattHOST
29:03
I feel like this is, this game is too huge probably.
Tom TateHOST
5:22
Another game that released was Jonathan Blow's Order of the Sinking Star.
Tom TateHOST
5:25
This is a new puzzle game by the creator of Braid and The Witness.
Tom TateHOST
5:29
First, I read Giovanni Colantonio's review over on Polygon.
Tom TateHOST
5:33
This review was titled, The 500-hour Order of the Sinking Star is as complex and exhausting as it sounds.
Chump SlapHOST
17:31
I just, like-
Doctor ScientistHOST
17:32
Do you ever play The Witness?
Chump SlapHOST
17:33
No.
Doctor ScientistHOST
17:33
There's w- it's like that.
Chump SlapHOST
17:36
Yeah, but I got through, I got through, like, 11 of the 12 puzzles, and then time ran out and I was like, "I'm not doing this again." [laughs]
Doctor ScientistHOST
17:41
Oh, I would never do that again.
Doctor ScientistHOST
17:43
The Witness is a good one too.
Doctor ScientistHOST
17:44
It's like a walking sim puzzle sort of thing.
Jonathan BlowGUEST
4:42
... like games where you explore and you find what you find, and you're as interested as you are, you know.
Jonathan BlowGUEST
4:49
Um, so like in The Witness also, uh, we don't tell people how many puzzles there are.
Jonathan BlowGUEST
4:55
[laughs] So you, you get a solve count and that's it.
Lukasz ScigaHOST
5:00
It's...

1 HR 9 MINS LATER

Jonathan BlowGUEST
74:05
But, but the point just being, um, you know, every game is different.
Jonathan BlowGUEST
74:10
When you make this decision, I want this game to look nice, it's sort of a different decision every time because the, the ramifications of that decision depend on what's in the game, how big is the game.
Jonathan BlowGUEST
74:22
Is it so The Witness was first person and this is third person, right? And, and does that matter? Yes, it does.
Jonathan BlowGUEST
74:29
And, um, well, in a game like this where we don't totally understand the game in the beginning, the ramifications of that decision are not even quite clear yet because we don't know what the game is.
PushingUpRosesHOST
76:39
So Myst, Blue Prince, and Outer Wilds.
PushingUpRosesHOST
76:42
Then we've got puzzle adventure, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, The Witness, and Limbo.
PushingUpRosesHOST
76:48
And then we have escape room, which I had zero recommendations and had Matt take that entire thing.
PushingUpRosesHOST
76:54
Cube Escape Collection, Is This Game Trying to Kill Me?, and I Expect You to Die.
BallyHOST
103:38
... hopefully that makes sense, um, to Tim and others.
BallyHOST
103:41
Uh, our next email's from Declan from Montreal I recently finished playing Blueprints, Outer Wilds, and The Witness in the past few months.
BallyHOST
103:50
They are amazing in concept, although I think I am burnt out on these high concept, interconnected true endings.
BallyHOST
103:56
They seem hit or miss for me, but are GOATs for many.
BallyHOST
107:41
I think I-- So I've played Outer Wilds, and I've talked about it on the show before, but I, I rate myself a bit as a gritty gamer.
BallyHOST
107:48
I think that I, I can be quite gritty and dig down and, you know, think, "I'm gonna try this boss again." I'm-- Whether it's a 2D platformer, a 3D action or whatever, I'm quite gritty when it comes to re-attempting those things.
BallyHOST
108:02
I want to be grittier when it comes to games like Blueprints, Outer Wilds, The Witness.
BallyHOST
108:07
I want to be able to be that same level of stubborn and be like, "Right, okay, but now I need to lock in and work out how does this link to this?" Because I went into Outer Wilds not being patient enough.
