While he's in the bathroom, one of the teens thinks he's a dealer and tries to score a 20, but Stevens just walks away.

A scene cuts to a loud classroom and a teacher is trying to teach, but nobody's paying him any mind.

The teacher, Mr. Kerrigan, is the watchman from Way of the Gun.

I thought that was awesome.

But unfortunately, both underperformed at the box office, and he continued to work as a character actor for a while in movies like Fearless and Christopher Columbus The Discovery, before finally getting the public's attention properly with the 1995 crime thriller The Usual Suspects.

He went on to do Basquiat, The Fan, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for Terry Gilliam, then took a break from acting for a couple of years after the poor reviews of that last film, only to come back strong in 2000 with Snatch, The Way of the Gun, and Traffic all in that same year, and collecting an Oscar for that last one.

He's continued to be popular ever since, appearing in everything from Sin City to Guardians of the Galaxy to Sicario to Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi, and he was recently nominated for another Oscar for his performance in 2025's Critical Darling One Battle After Another, so he's still got the juice after all these years.

Even though I will admit here and now, I sometimes struggle to connect with his performances.

But so long ago.

We're talking about the guy who wrote The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie.

Plus his own directorial debut, The Way of the Gun, which is, as the review says, a criminally underrated thriller.

He gets complex plotting.

And for Reacher, he seems to have deliberately chosen a style that feels... different from a lot of modern blockbusters, especially the action.
