That part reminds me a lot of sort of pub rock bands from the UK.
B
37:23Brian SalvatoreHOST
Also, maybe something like the Waterboys from the early 80s, if anybody remembers the Waterboys.
B
37:28Brian SalvatoreHOST
uh stuff like that just a a really or even maybe the feelies a tiny bit just this like chugging acoustic guitar with a really strong rhythm section but i think that melodically they remind me the most of rem who anyone who knows me knows my absolute love of rem and so um this record just uh totally spoke to me when I first heard it.

I do have one weird complaint about it, and complaint is not the right word.

think I probably... came to them pretty late and probably only really became fully aware of them when they sort of once upon a time when they became really commercial like a lot of folk a lot of my earlier 80s music I was probably the stuff my brother was listening to so there was definitely stuff like Japan Human League The Smiths but some of mine seemed to pass me by and by the time they really hit you know kind of stadium size I kind of thought they were quite unfashionable and I was more into the kind of Certainly a lot of the Glasgow and Scottish bands that were a bit newer.
C
8:43Colin McCrediePANELIST
So thinking about when they played Ibrox, I was probably more interested in Lloyd Cullen commotions, Hipsway, the Waterboys, those sort of acts.
C
8:51Colin McCrediePANELIST
So I always kind of regarded them not with...
C

I didn't have a great fondness for them but as time has gone on I've realised how stupendously influential they have been and they've kept going and you still see them I turned on, they were playing at Stirling recently, the Radio 2 thing and they're still a fantastic band and I started reading this great book by Graham Thompson and I watched the documentary last year which I think is still on iPlayer which is a fantastic documentary and I've gone back and done a bit of a deep dive on certainly a lot of the early stuff and I think they're just fantastic and I feel a wee bit guilty that I missed that time and I dismissed them as being this kind of stadium rock middle of the road kind of band so tut tut

Editors' Justin Lockey on 'Surface, Echo & Sound' & Why the Band Kept Going (#305)
J
19:01Justin LockeyGUEST
It's like, well, you know, instead of going in and trying to replace that with a guitar or a keyboard, let's be bold enough to actually just use a mandolin and not bury it.
J
19:11Justin LockeyGUEST
And I think we're a band of that age now where we can get away with putting a mandolin on a record without it sounding like the Waterboys or, you know what I mean? Or like being like, like kind of from a folky way.
J
19:25Justin LockeyGUEST
Definitely a nod to R.E.M. We're all massive R.E.M. fans.
J
19:27Justin LockeyGUEST
But yeah, I think if you're on album eight, you should be allowed to play the fucking mandolin.

Today, you've got amazing bands keeping that Irish rock spirit alive from Dublin City like the Deadly Inns, Fontaines, D.C., The Scrouch, and that amazing Irish metal band, Cruican, not to mention the amazing Waylander from the Hills of Antrim, but also from Cork City, you've got Cardinals and Pebble Dash, from Tipperary, the amazing Bog Bodies, and from Galway, the Walls and the Stunning, and the amazing band called The Falls from Belfast.
D

But we just heard the Calamar Fox from the Waterboys, great Celtic rock from Scotland.

But I'd like to conclude with probably one of the best Thin Lizzy tunes of all time, Roisin Dove.

Yes, I had a friend who went to see the Waterboys last two weeks ago, and he said it was okay until they had a kind of a quiet number, and then people started making phone calls and chatting to friends on WhatsApp, and he was like, oh, my God, this is terrible.
D
17:24David EastaughHOST
You know, it's suddenly people are actually having conversations.

I thought, you know, it would annoy me if people were filming, but to be actually having a chat during a quiet number would be very...
