The Walking Dead

It's like, yo, Kirkman, Robert Kirkman, the writer of this series, is no stranger to writing, um, like big war storylines.

He did this, he's done this in his signature series, like The Walking Dead twice actually.

Like in All Out War when, um, it's like when, when Rick, um, took o- took on Negan over the course of like, um, 12, like 12 issues.

And like yo manage like a great back and forth, um, bet- between, between these two sides.

And I think there is something cool about that, like, where it's like, oh, you have this rich history and you can pick and choose which parts of it you want to- ... play with, and you kind of ignore the rest of it.

But, I mean, that's less coherent than, like, a Mind Management or, um, even, like, a Walking Dead or something like that where it's, like, driven by one creator or a couple creators.

Um, [lips smack] but there's nothing else like that-

Yeah

And that was really fun.

And then when I worked on my Walking Dead books, the fellow Cliff Rathburn who did all the gray tones on the original Walking Dead books, he did the gray tones on my books too, as a way to like make that Walking Dead universe feel really cohesive.

And that was really cool because I don't draw, I have like a hint of mainstream in my drawing, but I would say I'm like largely an indie cartoonist.

And so to have Cliff Rathburn come and do this like really serious gray tone all over my art was really, really awesome.

No one, no one pushes anyone out.

You know, I've made, I've done sci-fi.

I did the walking dead and, I've done magical realism, I've done memoir, and now I've done a historical comic.

I think writers and artists in this field should feel very comfortable trying on new genres, trying something they've never done before.

Yeah.

And I've got comics in the back, so if you guys don't know, I am doing comics in every issue of Walking Dead Deluxe.

Nice.

Look at that.

There was something else I wanted to talk about.

Now let's take a look at the omnibuses.

Yeah, it's like Robert Kirkman is...

Like, at one point he was, but now Robert Kirkman with The Walking Dead and Invincible, Terminal now.

I don't know if we can call him an indie.

Like you said, creator-owned probably, but I don't know, indie.

So it wasn't a comic per se, or it was a comic in its form, but not a comic in its essence because they wanted it to be something else.

So they were writing it for something else.

um and robert kirkman wasn't like that at all i mean he's he's a comic guy true and true um in that respect so but the fact that he had the success of the walking dead and invincible it gives a lot of hope to you know these guys that are doing it on their own to be able to possibly do that but also a lot of people don't realize how long He's been doing it.

It wasn't an overnight success.
