The Vow

We woke up from a cult.

The whole wild ride ended up in The Vow on HBO and in my memoir, Scarred.

Now after eight seasons of hearing every kind of culty story imaginable, we've bottled up everything we've learned into a book, also called A Little Bit Culty.

It's available now in all formats on Amazon, Audible, and where fine books are sold.

Uh, please do.

You can get, see that online or in a theater near you.

And I hadn't seen him in, I didn't realize this, since before The Vow came out, since 2019.

That's right.

And I'll give an example.

The cult leader Keith Raniere is featured in the documentary The Vow on HBO.

It's quite an extraordinary story about how whistleblowers got this cult leader put in jail, which doesn't happen very often.

And Ranieri had a very wealthy follower who was able to pay for an audience with the Dalai Lama.

Uh, a little housekeeping before we dive into this episode of The Traitors: New Blood.

If you've missed our past coverage of this show, just scroll back in the feed.

It's all there.

Last week, when The Traitors: New Blood took a week off inexplicably, we talked about some news and gossip, Chris Harrison's new show, The Vow, the trailer, uh, which was very interesting, and, uh, we also got into the Love Is Blind Boston cast bios.

So that was a really fun episode.

You can find that in our feed.

Rich Text is now on Patreon, and our latest episode was about Erin Lee Carr's new documentary on the 2004 reality show, The Swan.

Uh, so that was quite a trip to look back on that show.

Mm-hmm.

You'd already filmed The Vow.

You'd already done a bunch of interviews.

But in the same chapter, you kind of echo the same advice, like, you know, heal before you holler.

This month, October 17th, marks nine years since you blew the whistle on NXIVM in The New York Times, four years since the final season of The Vow premiered.

Looking back at all this that's happened in the last almost decade now, do you regret processing your trauma on film? If you went back to your younger self, would you advise yourself do something differently?

Since we can't go back in time, it's hard [laughs] to, um, think that way.

...

Nancy Salzman pled guilty to racketeering conspiracy and served her own prison sentence.

I first interviewed Sarah in twenty twenty-one after she appeared in HBO's The Vow, and we became instant friends, and she's been one of my favorite podcast friends and confidants.

confidants.Last year, I connected with Nancy Salzman.

She graciously granted me her first interview since her release from prison.

I mean, she, she said that on your podcast.

She used to tell that story all the time, that he asked her to make a lifetime commit.

She wa- I mean, she was, like, essentially the vow.

She took a vow.

I was hoping that this would really knock my socks off and have my head spin all the way around.

It would be really crazy, like The Vow, the Nixxiom documentary on HBO.

Anyone remember that crazy shit? Yeah, nowhere near as crazy as that.

They really didn't reveal too much, but it's definitely still entertaining, at least for the nostalgia of it all.
