Tho- those things that I learned from watching OG Voltron, um, and especially, like, Robotech, it, those lessons, I learned them almost too young, right? It was such a sophisticated, emotional...

It didn't cater to the idea that you're a kid and that you wouldn't understand it.

[upbeat music] In 1985, Robotech changed the landscape of American television animation, an epic assembled from three separate Japanese series and rewritten into one sweeping multi-generational war for the secret of protoculture.

After the climactic devastation of the Macross saga, Earth is rebuilding.

The Zentradi threat has been beaten back, but the conflict was only the beginning.

Enter Robotech: The Masters, the second chapter of the original 85-episode saga.
Daniel HendrixHOST
1:11
Set years after the first war, the story follows Dana Sterling, daughter of Max and Miriya, as she leads the 15th Tactical Armored Squadron against a new enemy arriving in Earth's orbit, the Robotech Masters.
Daniel HendrixHOST
1:24
They are the masters of the Zentradi, and they have come searching for the lost technology of Zor, the genius behind Robotechnology, the flower of life, and the power source known as protoculture.
Daniel HendrixHOST

Adapted from the Japanese series Super Dimension Cavalry: Southern Cross, The Masters had the difficult job of connecting the familiar world of Macross to the cosmic finale still to come.
Daniel HendrixHOST

It expanded the mythology with clone societies, Bioroids, Zor Prime, and the tragic revelation that Earth's victory may have planted the seeds of an even greater invasion.

[laughs] And, um, and, uh, the bell would ring, and it would take me about 15 to 20 minutes to get home.
Phil McKnightHOST

And so I had to hustle 'cause the Robotech came on at 3:30.
Phil McKnightHOST
4:29
So I wanted to see Robotech.
Phil McKnightHOST
4:30
And then after Robotech, 'cause, uh, 'cause, uh, those of us old enough to remember, you only got so much time in the afternoon for your cartoons.
Phil McKnightHOST
4:36
And then they would just go...
Phil McKnightHOST
4:38
They would fade into the regular TV shows.
Phil McKnightHOST

But I go with him, right? Uh, you know, he, uh, obviously he was a young age, and then now he's an adult man.
Phil McKnightHOST
6:06
I still go with him when he wants to go, and, uh, uh, I, I love it.

i wonder uh i wonder if harmony gold has put out another press conference so they apologize for the live action robotech film not being out yet they did that like once every few months or like once a year for like literally two decades they would do that at this point i'm just
SengaHOST
35:10
assuming it's never coming and it was all just like some weird like producer style money they're getting money out of like the la government but like a project they're never gonna complete
ShaneHOST
35:23
If they actually announce this is coming next year for real, we should put this on pause and watch all of Robotech really quickly again.
SengaHOST
35:31
Bring
ShaneHOST
35:32
back Do You Remember Robotech? Just have Manny only there for the live action show.
SengaHOST
35:36

I do know this was also played on PBS in the US which is fascinating because this show probably should not have been on PBS ever given some of the stuff it's doing but also it was that weird part of the mid to late 80s where television in the US was expanding rapidly and they had more channels and content and so they found that sourcing overseas content was cheap And so that's why we also got a lot of like hastily dubbed Japanese shows.
Eddy WebbHOST
6:21
And we've talked about some of this with things like we talked about Robotech and Voltron.
Eddy WebbHOST
6:27
That's all part of that same wave of let's get content onto our screens as fast as possible.
Chris SpiveyHOST
6:33
I could do this on PBS because one of the big things that PBS does is they try to enlighten people and show them like different cultures and expand their horizons.
AlexHOST
6:09
So, I mean, I'm older.
AlexHOST
6:11
So, like, if you said, oh, I watch Robotech, and then I'd be like, that's amazing.
AlexHOST
6:16
That happens.
AlexHOST
6:18
Yeah, because I have an older brother.
AlexHOST

And he was like a definite Gen Xer.
AlexHOST
6:26
So he always like had cool stuff that I grew up watching and I was like too young to really appreciate.
AlexHOST
6:31
But yeah, Robotech is for those things.
ZachHOST

Talking about live action television, feeling adult and like a completely different thing that really speaks to me.

Um, again, it's one of those things where it's, they, they took it and they kind of put their own spin on it, but it was to me.
ScotHOST
60:44
I have opinions.
ScotHOST
60:46
It's difficult for me to pick Thundercats because as good as it is, the whole thing is a ripoff of the Robotech intro.
ScotHOST
60:53
Oh, yeah.
