The Third Robotech War: The New Generation

Um, I don't know, but I still love those shows.

Tho- those things that I learned from watching OG Voltron, um, and especially, like, Robotech, it, those lessons, I learned them almost too young, right? It was such a sophisticated, emotional...

It didn't cater to the idea that you're a kid and that you wouldn't understand it.

It's more like, "You get this.

[laughs] And, um, and, uh, the bell would ring, and it would take me about 15 to 20 minutes to get home.

And so I had to hustle 'cause the Robotech came on at 3:30.

So I wanted to see Robotech.

And then after Robotech, 'cause, uh, 'cause, uh, those of us old enough to remember, you only got so much time in the afternoon for your cartoons.

And then they would just go...

They would fade into the regular TV shows.

But I go with him, right? Uh, you know, he, uh, obviously he was a young age, and then now he's an adult man.

I still go with him when he wants to go, and, uh, uh, I, I love it.

I do know this was also played on PBS in the US which is fascinating because this show probably should not have been on PBS ever given some of the stuff it's doing but also it was that weird part of the mid to late 80s where television in the US was expanding rapidly and they had more channels and content and so they found that sourcing overseas content was cheap And so that's why we also got a lot of like hastily dubbed Japanese shows.

And we've talked about some of this with things like we talked about Robotech and Voltron.

That's all part of that same wave of let's get content onto our screens as fast as possible.

I could do this on PBS because one of the big things that PBS does is they try to enlighten people and show them like different cultures and expand their horizons.

So, I mean, I'm older.

So, like, if you said, oh, I watch Robotech, and then I'd be like, that's amazing.

That happens.

Yeah, because I have an older brother.

And he was like a definite Gen Xer.

So he always like had cool stuff that I grew up watching and I was like too young to really appreciate.

But yeah, Robotech is for those things.

Talking about live action television, feeling adult and like a completely different thing that really speaks to me.

Yeah, you're right.

Not Voltron, but Robotech.

If you've never heard of that, look that up.

Look at the originals.

Yeah.

I mean, that is interesting because when Robotech came out in America...

Um, again, it's one of those things where it's, they, they took it and they kind of put their own spin on it, but it was to me.

I have opinions.

It's difficult for me to pick Thundercats because as good as it is, the whole thing is a ripoff of the Robotech intro.

Oh, yeah.

The basic construction of it.

Visionaries versus Looney Tunes.

Gem versus Banana Man.

Robotech versus Voltron.

That's a good

All right, so now 3.5, we're in the territory of I would wholeheartedly recommend this stuff.

Macross Plus, which is an OVA based on the Macross, or you may know it as Robotech series.
