Mark MansonGUEST
11:33
This is how it shows up in social media content.
Sean CannellHOST
11:36
You've said that a lot of the marketing of the subtle art of not giving an F happened before you wrote it.
Sean CannellHOST
11:42
Yeah.
Sean CannellHOST
11:42
What did you figure out
Mark MansonGUEST
15:52
You want to have your original idea, but you need to combine it with other things.
Mark MansonGUEST
15:55
So maybe it's one unique idea plus... unique way you shoot the video plus you're like cooking breakfast during every video like you need to it's the combination of two or three unexpected things that usually don't go together if you can put them together in a way that's coherent and makes sense to the viewer that becomes your differentiator yeah and and like that's the thing that's not really replicable that that's like unique to you um that if you can find just like this a concoction of two or three unique elements add them all together That becomes the brand.
Sean CannellHOST
16:30
Did the subtle art of not giving an F get distributed in like major retailers, meaning it's on the shelves at Target, Walmart? Not initially.
Sean CannellHOST
16:39
So funny story.
Ben WelchHOST
60:20
And then I put all my things that have been bothering me into AI.
Ben WelchHOST
60:24
And I said, what would the advice in the books, the ones that I particularly like, what would they, what would be the advice from those books that I like? And I'll put in, Ryan Holiday, who does Stoicism, Mel Robbins, who's Let Them, and Mark Manson, which is The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.
Ben WelchHOST
60:42
Come out with some good stuff.
Ben WelchHOST
60:44
I'm not going to go deep into it, but this is what I think, I don't know what AI it was, but very friendly.
Stuart DryburghGUEST
8:31
And it's a terrific piece of writing.
Stuart DryburghGUEST
8:34
And I didn't know the book.
Stuart DryburghGUEST
8:37
I didn't grow up in the US.
Stuart DryburghGUEST
8:38
I probably would have done it in high school had I, but I didn't.

Stuart DryburghGUEST
17:38
as I guess Cal, that it just didn't seem relevant to me.
Stuart DryburghGUEST
17:42
And it also didn't, I'm not sure it was even that relevant to Zoe.
Alana CodyHOST
17:46
no i mean as a fan you know and i read east of eden i in as a student you know growing up in california sure in high school i loved that book it was so it was a great it was my probably one of my favorite steinbeck books i mean the grapes of wrath is good but i liked east of eden more i because of the complexity of the characters you know i think and the character of kathy who is just So, I mean, I feel like in the I feel like what I like about the show that's different that the book didn't do is it sort of gives Kathy a little bit more of a background, a little bit more of, I don't know, ambiguity rather than being like pure evil.
Alana CodyHOST
18:31
Like in the book, it's kind of more black and white.
Ambyr ChildersGUEST
6:55
And the author's so funny and it's just so good.
Ambyr ChildersGUEST
6:59
It's called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.
David YontefHOST
7:01
I've heard of it.
David YontefHOST
7:03
Is it like, but I mean, it's really good,
Kelly RizzoHOST
53:15
Oh, what's that one? Is it, what's his name? Mark Manson or-
Sabrina ZoharGUEST
53:17
Yeah, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.
Kelly RizzoHOST
53:18
Yeah, okay.
Sabrina ZoharGUEST
53:19
Yeah.
Stephanie RimkaGUEST
18:26
I love reading.
Stephanie RimkaGUEST
18:28
The, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F-
Tasha ChenHOST
18:31
[laughs]
Stephanie RimkaGUEST
18:31
Right? Mark Manson.
Hamza AhmedSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
6:30
Fuck.
Hamza AhmedSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
6:30
Something mentioned in The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson is that constantly reminding yourself of something, doing power poses and looking yourself in the mirror and giving affirmations like, "I am a confident, attractive person," that just constantly reminds you what you don't have.
Hamza AhmedSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
6:44
Because common sense would dictate that someone who is an attractive, confident person wouldn't have to stare at themselves in the mirror, make the poses that make them p- confident, and say, "I am a confident, attractive person." They just are confident and attractive.
Hamza AhmedSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
6:56
So by constantly manifesting something like, "Oh, I am really confident," you're just reminding yourself that you technically aren't confident, because confident people wouldn't need to say that.
Jeremy StevensonGUEST

...
Jeremy StevensonGUEST

And it's not just books because there's all these therapies with all those acronyms as well, like acceptance and commitment therapy-
Steven MathisHOST

There's a book called Models: Attract Women Through Honesty, written by Mark Manson.
Steven MathisHOST
1:04
Mark went on to write other books, including one you might be familiar with, called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.
Steven MathisHOST
1:11
That book sold millions of copies, as did Models.
Steven MathisHOST
1:15
Now, Models was first published in two thousand eleven, and at the time that it came out, it really broke away from most of what was being published in the space at the time, which was largely pickup artist culture.
Jennie BellingerGUEST
60:53
That cracks me up.
Jennie BellingerGUEST
60:55
But interestingly enough, what got me started down the not giving a fuck thing was actually the book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.
Michaela Gaffen StoneHOST
61:05
That's a good book.
Michaela Gaffen StoneHOST
61:06
