With Michelle Branch, the girl that I fantasized...
Bowen YangHOST
I had a fantasy in middle school while The Spirit Room was in my Discman, while I was in bed-
Matt RogersHOST
Mm-hmm
Bowen YangHOST
... listening to The Spirit Room-

... to Sweet Misery, to You Get Me-
Chantel NicoleHOST
Yeah.
ChrisHOST
And because Michelle Branch is embarking on her tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her album, The Spirit Room, we are going to talk about it.
ChrisHOST
That's right, we're going to go into the spirit room.
Chantel NicoleHOST
Yeah.
ChrisHOST
And you're here to join us.
ChrisHOST
[laughs]
Chantel NicoleHOST
Yes.

So The Spirit Room was released in August 2001 on Maverick Records, which is Madonna's label, and it is her major label debut, and she had turned 18 years old just a few weeks earlier.

Jason, I'm doing really well, especially because this is like a lifelong goal of mine to just sit down on a podcast and just go for an hour or so of just talking about Michelle Branch and just spreading the gospel of this singer that I honestly like.
Joseph WhalenGUEST
As those songs were coming out, that album that you referred to, The Spirit Room, that I heard so much on the radio when I was five or six years old.
Joseph WhalenGUEST
And they were just sort of ingrained in my mind.
Joseph WhalenGUEST
And then it was years and years later that I sort of rediscovered these songs.
Jason WhissellHOST
But still a good song on its own.
Jason WhissellHOST
But we're going to go all the way back to 2000 and the album Broken Bracelet released on Twin Dragon Records.
Jason WhissellHOST
I will admit going into this, I knew of the Spirit Room because that was a huge freaking album.
Jason WhissellHOST
I knew of Hotel Paper.
Sharyn CaseyHOST
It's just wonderful.
Sharyn CaseyHOST
Now, what is your thing to listen to this week? I mentioned it earlier, but Michelle Branch, our millennial queen, has been reimagining her album, The Spirit Room, and also the singles off Hotel Paper, her second album.
Sharyn CaseyHOST
And the latest one that she has released is Goodbye to You with Maren Morris.
Sharyn CaseyHOST
Now, I, as you all know, am obsessed with Maren Morris, so to have her... and Michelle Branch on one of my favorite ballads of all time is just the greatest gift that I could have asked for.
Kyle RidleyHOST
She's released one with the New Radicals lead singer for Game of Love, and now she's releasing a new version of her hit song, Goodbye to You, which I think is my favorite song of hers.
Kyle RidleyHOST
It's from her 2001 debut album, The Spirit Room, which is celebrating 25 years.
Kyle RidleyHOST
That's why she's re-releasing all this music.
Kyle RidleyHOST
And the new duet includes none other than Maren Morris, who I adore, this artist.
Kyle RidleyHOST
You were the one I loved, the one I tried to hold on to.
Kyle RidleyHOST
Give it a listen.
Kyle RidleyHOST
Give The Spirit Room a listen.
Kyle RidleyHOST
Give Hotel Paper and all of her albums a listen.
