The Shrouds

And then also, I just saw for the first time David Cronenberg's A History of Violence.

I have mixed feelings about Cronenberg because he's a little gruesome for me in general, but I did really like his recent film The Shrouds, and so I've been kind of...

Yeah, I'm not a huge Cronenberg guy, but I thought that movie was quite good.

I thought that was one of Viggo Mortensen's

films aren't conducive to that kind of environment i mean can obviously is you know the highest profile festival in the world but like that does it's not you know always conducive to like thinking about films uh that require you know reflection um um i was very happy yeah i think that this this um phenomenon that you describe um i'm always happy to see films more warmly warmly and thoughtfully received here than they they And I have every sympathy for this because I feel like the people, whether it's critics or buyers or programmers at festivals like Cannes, where it's just from one thing to the next to the next, and I think it's hard to really give films your full attention.

Within the last couple of years, I was really happy to see The Shrouds by David Cronenberg really get its due here, I think.

And this year, I'm pretty... sure that our audience is going to go for Arthur Harari's The Unknown, a film that I think was overlooked in Cannes and really does, you know, is yeah, I think a really interesting twist on the genre film and a film that I think really should be, yeah, taken seriously.

there's always that slot like later in can like it's usually either the kelly records slaughter this year like the dreamed adventure where it's like the festival did win a big prize and then it won a big prize but i feel like it needs it needs another boost and it can it can use it here and it'll be i'm excited to see that um more embraced hopefully but

And what I'm trying to do there is write more about films, about movies, about my sort of my history with films in particular, writing about stuff that I don't really get a chance to talk about here.

Like I don't really have a reason here in Hollywood land to talk about inner space at this moment, or about The Shrouds, which is another thing I wrote about recently.

There's been so much that's come out that's been obviously an homage to Cronenberg.

And he has that distinct style that when you watch these movies, you're like, oh, yeah, that's a Cronenberg reference, right? And, you know, I haven't seen a lot of his newer stuff like Shrouds.

I know Will was talking about that one.

How would you feel if I came back to you and I said I like the Shrouds?

I would assume you are talking out of your head.

I know one other person that has seen the shrouds and they gave it two stars and I confronted them in an elevator about it and every point they had, I shut down instantly and was like, no.

But the main argument for the shrouds was, well, I think it's good that Cronenberg paints himself as a weird little guy.

And I'm like, yeah, but all the weird little shit that he does is not stuff I would ever want to know about and is very strange to be putting in the public when the metaphors of the shrouds are real life people and you're saying some really strange things about them you weird perverted old man

You know, I have to check my bathtub drain, you know, every time.

You know, and even seeing like his last film, The Shrouds, like a lot of people didn't get at the festivals.

And I thought, you know, you're kind of missing the point.

You don't understand Cronenberg.

that's just part of Cronenberg.

It's kind of weird.

It's a decrepit sense of humor, you know, and I like that low budget kind of edgy filming and like and seeing the similar themes from something like the brood that in his most recent film, The Shrouds, like the way these things kind of match.

And it's so it is a funny parody because you just watch this at first.

And I thought, ooh, I haven't seen The Shrouds from 2024, I should give it a watch.
